Critical illness
insurance, types, benefits, questions..Welcome to Part 3 of our insurance series.

Today we're talking about Critical Illness Insurance.

Most people have heard of critical illness insurance, but many people don't know there are different types of plans.

Let's start with the most common type.

Lump Sum Critical Illness Insurance.

If you're diagnosed with a covered critical illness and meet the policy conditions, you receive a one-time tax-free payment.

You can use the money however you want.

Pay your mortgage, cover household bills, take time off work, seek treatment, or simply focus on recovery.

The second type is Monthly Benefit Critical Illness Insurance.

Instead of receiving one large payment, you receive monthly payments for a specified period.

Some people prefer this because it provides ongoing financial support.

The next thing to understand is the number of illnesses covered.

Some basic plans only cover major conditions such as cancer, heart attack, and stroke.

Other plans may cover 10 illnesses, 25 illnesses, or even more depending on the insurer.

Another feature you may see is Return of Premium.

Some plans offer the option to return part or all of your premiums if certain conditions are met.

This feature usually increases the cost of the policy, so it's important to understand the trade-offs.

There are also Critical Illness plans available for children.

These plans can help families manage unexpected expenses if a child is diagnosed with a covered illness.

Before buying Critical Illness Insurance, ask yourself three questions.

How much money would my family need if I became seriously ill?

Would I prefer one large payment or monthly payments?

And how many illnesses do I want covered?

Critical Illness Insurance is not about replacing income forever.

It's about giving your family financial flexibility during one of the most difficult times in life.

Most people know they have life insurance, but very few people understand disability insurance.

The reality is, during your working years, you're actually more likely to become disabled than to pass away prematurely.

So let's look at the main types of disability coverage.

The first type is Monthly Benefit Disability Insurance.

This is the most common type.

If an injury or illness prevents you from working, the insurance company pays you a monthly income.

But before buying this type of plan, there are three important questions.

How much monthly benefit do you need?

How long can you wait before payments start? This is called the waiting period. It could be 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days.

And finally, how long should the benefits continue? Two years? Five years? Or all the way to age 65?

The second type is Lump Sum Disability Insurance.

Instead of receiving monthly payments, you receive one large payment if a covered disability occurs.

Some people prefer this because it gives them immediate access to money for medical expenses, home modifications, debt payments, or other financial needs.

The third type is Partial Disability Insurance.

This is for people who can still work but cannot perform all of their duties or cannot work full-time.

Maybe you're able to work three days a week instead of five.

In that case, the policy may help replace part of your lost income.

The fourth type is Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage, often called AD&D.

This coverage is designed for serious accidents that result in the loss of a limb, vision, hearing, or accidental death.

It's important to understand that AD&D is not the same as regular disability insurance.

It only pays for specific accidental injuries or accidental death.

So before buying disability coverage, ask yourself three simple questions:

If I couldn't work tomorrow, how much income would I need every month?

How long could I survive without a paycheck?

And how long would I want benefits to continue?

The answers to those questions can help determine which disability plan is right for you.
