A student with low vision may not need the same support in every classroom.

But a few simple things can make learning materials easier to access.

• Give the student flexibility to sit where they can see best.

• Check lighting and glare from windows, boards and screens.

• Share slides, notes and classroom materials digitally when possible.

• Use clear, larger and less cluttered print when needed.

• Make sure there is enough desk space for a laptop, magnifier or other assistive technology.

Most importantly, ask the student and their TVI what works best for them.

A small change in the classroom can make a big difference in how easily a student can take part.

A school day does not happen at one desk.

Students move between classrooms, different activities, and different devices throughout the day.

Small text on your computer screen?

Windows already has a few tools that may make it easier to read.

1. Make the text larger

Open Settings, select Accessibility, then Text size. Move the slider until the text feels comfortable.

2. Zoom in quickly

Press the Windows key and Plus key together to turn on Magnifier.

Press the Windows key and Esc when you are finished.

3. Try a contrast theme

Open Settings, select Accessibility, then Contrast themes. Try the available options and choose the one that feels clearest.

Save these steps for the next time your screen feels difficult to read.

Choosing a low vision tool is not only about what the device can do. It also needs to work for the student, in the classroom they use every day.

Before making a decision, schools can ask:

- What does the student need to read or view during a normal lesson?

- Will the tool work with the laptop, tablet, and other technology already being used?

- Can the student carry it, set it up, and move between activities without missing part of the lesson?

- Is it comfortable to use for reading or viewing over a longer period?

- Who will help the student learn how to use it confidently?

A good tool should fit naturally into the school day and help the student take part with less difficulty.
