It’s Allergy Season!!! Let’s chat with Dr. Zhu, a certified Allergist on *What is the difference between a food allergy and food sensitivity?*

🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜

A food allergy is an exaggerated response from the immune system that is reproducible and can be serious. A food sensitivity or intolerance is different and usually not related to the immune system and generally involves the gut.

On May 23, I had the privilege of presenting at my hometown community center in Hamilton, Ontario, for the SEED (Supportive Environments and Experiences for Development) program—an early childhood initiative for Ismaili families with children aged 0 to 4.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with young families in a safe, engaging space to discuss all things pediatrics. Together, we explored developmentally appropriate toys and tackled important topics like sleep, tantrums, and motor delays, while giving parents a platform to share their own experiences.

While most of my presentations take place in academic or clinical rounds, stepping outside that environment to give back to my own community in such a holistic and creative way was incredibly rewarding. Thank you to Dr. Nagji and Dr. Bana for the invitation. I look forward to more opportunities like this in the future!

I’ve attached a modified version of the slides below for anyone interested in learning more.

]It’s Allergy Season!!! Let’s chat with Dr. Zhu, a certified Allergist on *What are some tips for parents to prevention a food allergy?*

🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜

1) Aggressive control for eczema - using barrier creams or topical medications, consistently and with frequent medical follow-ups with your P*P
2) Introducing allergens early - as early as 4 months if indicated
3) Keep allergen consistent - so that the body can get used to it
4) Allergen calendar to keep things organized - so you are less stressed and you can show your P*P the progress your child has made!

It’s Allergy Season!!! Let’s chat with Dr. Zhu, a certified Allergist on *why we are scared to introduce allergenic foods in your babies diet*

🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜

Why do so many families still delay introduction even when guidance has changed?

Many families still delay because they are scared of reactions, are following old advice like waiting until 1 year of age to introduce allergens which is not true, or are unsure of how to do it properly

What are the most common fears parents bring up when it comes to introducing allergens?

The questions I often get are, what does a reaction look like? How do I treat it? How much of the allergen do I give, how often and in what form.

PSA! If you are a child and are consuming 6% milk, hear me out! Consuming large amounts of milk (>500 ml per day) especially after 2 years of age will put children at risk for Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA). I see this in my practice all the time. IDA disproportionately affects approximately 30-33% of South Asian children. South Asia has one of the highest regional burdens globally, with 54.8% of the anemia burden attributed to iron deficiency.

Higher milk fat also has more calories which means kids can feel fuller longer and not have an appetite. It can affect their diet and nutrition leading to less variety in foods such as vegetables, lean proteins and complex carbs.

I am glad dairy companies are offering more consumer choice, but parents have to be mindful in making healthy food choices the next time they are at the grocery store.

It’s Allergy Season!!! Let’s chat with Dr. Zhu, a certified Allergist on *tolerating allergens in the diet and how to do it*

🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜

Introducing an allergen once is not enough. Once a baby is tolerating an allergen, keeping it in their diet regularly is very important. The goal is not just to start it, but to keep it going. Remember, CONSISTENCY IS KEY!

Here is what you need to know about HANTAVIRUS! Hantavirus is a serious respiratory disease transmitted primarily by infected rodents. Human to human transmission is rare but possible. Since there is no specific treatment or vaccine for the virus, let’s focus on prevention!

Here are the most effective tips to reduce your risk:
1. Seal Up Entry Points
2. Eliminate Food Sources and Nesting Sites
3. Practice Safe Cleanup
4. Precautions for Outdoor Activities
5. Recognize the Symptoms

If you have been exposed to rodents or a person who is at risk and develop symptoms like fever, severe muscle aches (especially in the thighs, hips, and back), or shortness of breath, seek medical attention immediately. Early detection is critical for managing the respiratory complications associated with Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS).

It’s Allergy Season!!! Let’s chat with Dr. Zhu, a certified Allergist on *what is early allergen introduction and why is this important?*

🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜

Early allergen introduction means offering food allergens as early as possible when baby is developmentally ready for solids.

🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑

Currently this is around 6 months but not earlier than 4 months. It matters because early introduction can help lower the chance of developing food allergies.

This May 1st, 2026 I had the honour of presenting at the THP Partners in Care CME program!

I spoke about pediatric dermatology skin conditions (i.e. newborn rashes, eczema, acne and measles).  I hope that this session engaged the audience, advocated for children suffering from these chronic conditions, how to safety and appropriately manage them, and when to refer to a specialist.

Special shout out to Erin Gardiner and Anna Meuser for their leadership!

JESSICA!!! Is saying “Jessica” going to help stop a tantrum? Let’s discuss! Behavior is communication. Before responding to a difficult moment, pause to identify the trigger. Once you understand the ‘why,’ you can choose the right tool for the job: connecting first to calm the nervous system, redirecting the action, and using time-ins or time-outs to help them reset.
