Ask a pedorthist : What is plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a very common painful symptom affecting the feet (arches & heels). It is a micro tearing of the connective tissue (plantar fascia) on the under surface of the feet. The role of the plantar fascia is to maintain arch integrity & assist in propulsion. When there is a malignement of the feet or repetitive stress, tearing can occur, leading to exquisite symptoms. Clients often comment on pain on the first steps after a period of rest.
Jobs where people are standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, often with improper footwear. Contributing factors are age, weight and injury.
Pedorthic treatment include assessment, clinical impression, construction of custom made foot orthotics, selection of proper footwear & strengthening / stretching the area.
Although painful symptoms can last up to 2 years, normally we see improvements within 3 days to 3 weeks after using foot devices regurlarly.
