A look at the latest trend - Beef tallow is rendered beef fat, usually from the suet around the kidneys. It's melted, strained and often whipped into a balm, sometimes with essential oils or other oils added.

What's in it: Mostly fatty acids (oleic, palmitic and stearic), with small amounts of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.

Why it's trending: It's marketed as "ancestral," natural and minimal-ingredient. Fans claim it resembles the skin's own lipids, so it supports the barrier and soothes dryness.

What the evidence says: There's very little research on tallow specifically.

It works as an occlusive and emollient, sealing in moisture the way other rich balms do, but claims beyond that are mostly anecdotal.

Downsides:
↪It's heavy and occlusive, so it can clog pores and trigger breakouts in acne-prone skin.

↪Its high oleic acid content can disrupt the barrier in some skin types.

↪Quality varies, it can go rancid, and it may have a smell.

↪It isn't suitable for vegans or people avoiding animal products.

Who it suits: Very dry, non-acne-prone skin, or use on the body, hands and lips.

Microneedling is my favourite treatment and I'd never use a roller on my own face.

At our clinic we use a Health Canada Approved microneedling pen and here are 3 reasons why you should never use a derma roller in it's place.

A pen goes straight in and straight out — clean vertical channels, controlled depth. A roller enters and exits on an angle, so every needle drags as it comes out. That's not a channel, it's a tear. Different injury, different healing, different result.

Then there's depth. Consumer rollers are usually too short to do what people think they're doing, and there's no way to control pressure across the cheek versus under the eye.

And the part nobody talks about — you can't sterilize a roller at home. Needles dull fast, and if you're breaking out, you're dragging that across your whole face.
