C-SECTION RECOVERY 🤍 | Supporting your body after birth

A C-section is major abdominal surgery — and while the incision may be the most visible part of recovery, your body has experienced changes far beyond the scar itself.

During pregnancy, birth and a C-section, the abdominal wall, diaphragm, pelvis, lower back and surrounding connective tissues all adapt. As healing progresses, some women may notice:

• Tightness or pulling around the scar
• Abdominal or pelvic tension
• Lower back or hip discomfort
• Changes in posture or mobility
• Discomfort when twisting, bending or lifting baby
• A feeling of restriction around the abdomen

How can osteopathy help?

Once it is appropriate for you postpartum, gentle osteopathic treatment can focus on restoring comfortable mobility and addressing musculoskeletal and fascial tension throughout the body.

Treatment may include gentle work around the abdomen and C-section scar, as well as the pelvis, diaphragm, rib cage, spine and surrounding tissues — always respecting your stage of healing and comfort.

The goal isn’t to “break up scar tissue,” but rather to support mobility, reduce areas of tension and help your body move more comfortably as it continues to recover.

And remember: postpartum care isn’t only about baby. Mom deserves care too. 🤍

GAS & TUMMY DISCOMFORT 🤍 | Little tummy, big feelings.

Gas, bloating, straining, pulling the legs toward the belly and general fussiness can make those early weeks difficult for both baby and parents.

A baby’s digestive system is still developing, but tension through the diaphragm, rib cage, abdomen and surrounding tissues may sometimes contribute to their overall discomfort.

Gentle osteopathic care may focus on improving mobility and reducing musculoskeletal tension throughout the body while supporting comfortable breathing and movement.

It’s not about simply “getting the gas out” — it’s about helping your baby’s body move as comfortably and freely as possible. 🤍

FEEDING DIFFICULTIES 🤍 | Could tension be affecting your baby’s latch?

Breastfeeding, bottle feeding, pumping or a combination of all — feeding requires coordination between your baby’s jaw, tongue, neck, cranial structures, breathing and swallowing.

Some babies may show:

• Difficulty achieving or maintaining a latch
• Preference for feeding on one side
• Clicking or losing suction
• Tiring quickly during feeds
• Tension through the jaw or neck
• Difficulty opening the mouth comfortably

Gentle osteopathic care assesses the whole baby, looking for areas of tension or reduced mobility that may be contributing to feeding mechanics.

🤍 Because feeding should be supported — however you choose to feed your baby.

Osteopathy does not replace assessment by your pediatrician, lactation consultant or other feeding specialist when needed.

PLAGIOCEPHALY 🤍 | It’s not always just about the head.

Noticing a flatter area on one side or at the back of your baby’s head?

When assessing plagiocephaly, osteopathic care looks beyond head shape.

A baby may also have a preferred head position or restrictions through the neck, shoulders, rib cage, spine, or pelvis that make it more comfortable to consistently rest on one side.

Gentle osteopathic care may help:

🤍 Improve neck and body mobility
🤍 Address associated muscular and fascial tension
🤍 Encourage more symmetrical positioning
🤍 Make tummy time and movement more comfortable

Osteopathy can be part of a broader approach alongside repositioning, tummy time and your baby’s medical care when needed.

NEWBORN TORTICOLLIS 🤍 | Does your baby always look to one side?

You may notice your baby prefers turning their head in one direction, sleeps with their head consistently to the same side, or seems uncomfortable turning the other way.

Sometimes this can be related to tension or reduced mobility through the neck, shoulders, rib cage, spine, or surrounding tissues — including tension following birth.

Gentle osteopathic care can assess your baby’s whole body and work to:

🤍 Improve neck and upper-body mobility
🤍 Address areas of tension or restriction
🤍 Encourage more symmetrical movement
🤍 Support comfortable positioning, feeding & tummy time

Early assessment can be helpful when you begin noticing a strong preference for one side.

NEWBORN REFLUX 🤍 | How can osteopathy help?

Spit-ups, frequent hiccups, arching, discomfort after feeds, difficulty settling when lying flat… reflux is very common in newborns as their digestive system is still developing.

But sometimes, tension within a baby’s body may add to their discomfort.

Gentle osteopathic care can assess and work with areas such as:

🤍 The diaphragm & rib cage — supporting comfortable breathing and mobility around the stomach and esophagus

🤍 The neck, jaw & mouth — addressing tensions that may affect sucking, swallowing, and feeding mechanics

🤍 The abdomen — using very gentle techniques to support mobility and ease surrounding tension

🤍 The whole body — birth can place significant forces on a newborn’s body, whether vaginal or C-section, and osteopathy can assess areas of restriction or asymmetry

The goal isn’t to “stop” normal spit-up. Instead, osteopathic treatment may help improve comfort, mobility, feeding mechanics, and overall ease when musculoskeletal tension is contributing to symptoms.

✨ Every baby is different, which is why treatment is always gentle and adapted to your newborn.

Persistent reflux, poor weight gain, feeding difficulties, forceful or green vomit, blood, breathing concerns, or significant distress should always be assessed by your baby’s healthcare provider.
