Brain Canada is a national non-profit organization that develops and supports collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research across the neurosciences. Through partnering with the public, private and voluntary sectors, Brain Canada connects the knowledge and resources available in this area to accelerate neuroscience research and funding and maximize the output of Canada’s world-cla

ss scientists and researchers. Brain Canada was created to address the twin challenges of increasing the scale of brain research funding in Canada and widening its scope to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration to produce insights for treating multiple disorders. Brain Canada is the new vision for Canadian brain research—the voice for the brain and the grouping of brain disorders, raising awareness about their prevalence and impact on individuals, families, the economy and society. But most important, through the research we are funding, we are giving hope to the millions of Canadians who are directly or indirectly touched by diseases, disorders, and injuries of the brain, spinal cord and nervous system.

The Advanced Optical Nanoscopy Platform for Neuroscience is a new Canadian initiative making next-generation molecular brain imaging tools more accessible to researchers across Quebec and Canada.

Led by Flavie Lavoie-Cardinal at Centre de recherche CERVO Brain research Centre Faculté de médecine - Université Laval it combines expertise in neuroscience, engineering, and AI to help scientists better understand how brain cells communicate, change, and are altered in disease.

The HD Biobank at UBC, one of the world's most important collections of human tissue samples for diseases like Huntington's, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's, exists because of the generosity of Canadian families who donate samples to give researchers the tools they need.

With new support from Brain Canada's 2025 Platform Support Grants, Dr. Michael Hayden's team is expanding nationwide sample collection, modernizing infrastructure, and making this irreplaceable resource more accessible to researchers in Canada and around the world.

Thanks to the Platform for Neurology Biomarker Innovation (PNBI) at UBC, now the largest academic neurology biomarker research program of its kind in North America, diagnosing Alzheimer's disease or multiple sclerosis can be as simple as a blood test.

Led by Cheryl Wellington and supported by Brain Canada's 2025 Platform Support Grants, PNBI is expanding access to blood-based diagnostic tools for neurological conditions across Canada, replacing costly imaging and invasive procedures.
