It’s good to be aware of the days that you are alive and they are not. Who you loved is gone (in the physical form) and somehow you’ve survived. You ARE still here because there are even more people to love, that want you near. This is why I will count the days and I will be grateful.

Grief is ever present because love is never ending. I see all the people I love that are still here and I see Matthew who is gone - to a different place. A place I have yet to know. I want to know it; it’s peace and freedom from the gravity of this world. I want to know that my boy is ok. It’s all so very sad to lose your child and not get the opportunity to say good bye, I love you. So, be real and be brave to say “I love you” and act out your love every day because the day you think you still will have left gets taken from you.

You ask how I am. I’ve made notes.

I’m not ‘good’. I am not ‘ok’.

I wish I was good and that my family wasn’t grieving and that one of my children are NOT gone from us.

None should be gone. All should be here and expected at the next family party.

I’ve been a mother for nearly 15,000 days. It’s all I know. It’s everything to me.

I just need a moment to make a shift in this altered reality.

I just need to find some supports to grab hold of as I tumble about through the vast unknown.

If you DO know how this feels - please message me - but I don’t really want you to know. And it’s ok if you don’t know what to say.

But someone reading this will know the pain the grips you in the night and the tears that burn your eyes.

I am frozen in time - the time that marks Matthew’s end of life is where I wait.

I can work all day with focus and efficiency, then it comes flooding back: Reality and devastation on a slinky- snapping back and forth.

I am not crazy. This is how grief is both gentle and harsh. Helping in fragments everyday.

Helping me to ever so slowly adapt to a new way of loving and relating to my son, Matthew of over 40 years.

My love is everlasting, it’s just the relationship to the rest of the world that has changed.

I must try to incorporate ways to keep his language of life alive in our family, so we can learn from each other more about who he was.

I don’t want a void at the table or his contributions missing during family discussions.

Can we somehow fill up the void with the pearls and oddities that he regularly shared with us?

If you are grieving, what inclusion ideas can you share?

My mind is still tumbling in grief and disbelief. Matthew’s death and absence from this world is nothing I will ever get used to. I will spend the rest of my life learning how to have a new relationship with his spirit and our shared memories. I will continue to look for him ‘at the speed of light’.

I have dreamed of my son Matthew many times since he left us and most of dreams point me to my other children and grandchildren. It’s like Matthew, who is all I want to think about, is telling me to remember everyone else. And I do. I love them and am trying to be gentle with them in a new way. In a way that only grief understands.

It’s been 60 days and 60 nights of missing you and trying to imagine a future without you in it. And I cannot. I want to hear your name. I want to hear your stories. I want to know other people’s stories of you. I will always hold a space for you in the room. You will never leave my heart Matthew.

It sucks that life goes on. It takes 9 months to bring a baby into this world let alone have time to learn to care and love it - all approved by society. It takes 1 second to declare that same baby who happens to be 40 years old now dead. And what ?? You should be over it. Give me at least 9 months to retract my uterus and after life. Please and thank you !!

There should be a license or some sort of 1 year pass that gives a mother permission to be out of her mind. Not crazy, but naturally devastated to lose her child. There ought to be NO expectation of capacity for anything other than grief for at least 1 year. That’s what I wish for all mothers.
