A case for massage as injury prevention.
We all know how good it feels. The deep exhale, the tension melting from your shoulders, a moment where your body deeply rests, and feel good. That alone is reason enough to book one.
But there's a conversation we don't have nearly enough: massage therapy as a powerful injury prevention tool.
Here's what the research actually shows:
1. It works with the body's natural mechanisms
Massage has been shown to reduce post-exercise inflammation, decrease muscle tension and soreness (DOMS), improve range of motion, and lower biochemical markers of muscle damage like creatine kinase. These are variables that determine how resilient your body is going into its next demand.
2. It changes your tissue at a structural level
Massage elongates shortened and adhered connective tissue, making the muscle-tendon unit more compliant and less stiff. This matters because excess stiffness can contribute to strains and tears. Less stiff tissue absorbs force better.
3. It interrupts the injury cycle
Unresolved tension, restricted movement, and accumulated fatigue create a compounding vulnerability. Massage attenuates inflammatory signaling, reduces swelling, and improves perceived recovery — which means your body isn't compensating every time you move.
4. Flexible tone = better mechanics
Improved flexibility and reduced muscle tone translate directly into cleaner movement patterns, less strain on joints and tendons, and a body that absorbs load the way it's supposed to.
5. The effects are local — AND systemic
Research has found that massage applied to the lower extremities can have a protective effect on vascular function following exertion-induced muscle damage, and may enhance circulation even in the absence of injury. Affecting your entire cardiovascular system.
6. The nervous system is part of it too
Mechanical pressure from massage influences nerve excitability — specifically the neurological mechanisms that regulate how your body responds to load and movement. A regulated nervous system moves more efficiently and recovers faster. This is one of the most undertalked pieces of injury prevention.
7. Stress can be held in your tissues
Chronic stress and elevated cortisol are well-established contributors to tissue vulnerability and slow recovery. Massage has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and shift the nervous system out of threat response. Your mental state is not separate from your physical resilience.
The numbers reflect it: ~38% of athletes regularly incorporate massage into their training protocols. ~93% report perceiving it as beneficial for injury prevention. And this is increasingly backed by peer-reviewed research, not just felt sense.
Massage isn't always just 'treating yourself'. It's maintenance. And maintenance is what keeps you thriving.
