Hi, 👋🏻 I’m Dr. Sandra Cortina and I am an internal medicine and American Board of Obesity Medicine specialist.

My hope is to share everything evidence-based about obesity medicine with YOU, the patient. For decades we have been duped by diet culture. However, “dieting” is not capable of effectively and sustainably reducing excess weight—it will almost always come back.

At the end of the day, obesity is a complex, chronic, progressive disease. Diet plays a role, but it’s not the main issue for the majority of us.

Obesity deserves medical treatment, just like any other medical disorder. On this page, I will do my best to review the latest science on how we now know best to treat this complex disorder.

Need to go on a medication for depression or anxiety? Don’t fret, because not all antidepressants cause weight gain, many are weight neutral, and some can even cause weight loss.

This is from one of my favorite meta-analyses on the average weight maintained on a few commonly prescribed antidepressant medications.

Results of course always vary.

Always talk to your prescribing practitioner about the risks of weight gain for your specific case.
