📚 Deep in the forests of County Leitrim, last week I found myself in a historical fiction novel. Down a narrow lane way, an old stone cottage stands among several antique outbuildings and a barn that houses a welsh pony named Avril, and her big buddy Dexter. Each morning I would wake to the sound of their happy nickers and soft munching of hay and grain. There were a few days considered a “heat wave” here on the Emerald Isle, but these old buildings remain cool, to the point you still need a fire in the morning and at night. It truly feels like time travel to ritually stoke the hearth and light the range for my tea. The decor is authentic: vintage plates, furniture, beautiful wooden antiques throughout, loads of old books, rugs and sheepskin covering the stone floors, right down to the fact there is only a bath to bathe in. I spent time exploring the endless pathway, lanes and trails. I also simply laid out flat on the grass in the garden, letting Mother ÉiriĂș hold me. It was very peaceful here, being serenaded by the birds, and receiving the occasional boop from one of the three Jack Russel Terriers that live at the host’s house next door. Lisgorman Cottage in Dromahair, is a private little gem tucked away in the ancient woods, a perfect escape to forget the modern world for a few days.

Epic Éire. The landscape and potent energy of the mountains, shoreline and ancient sites in Connaught (CĂșige Chonnacht) blows my mind. Some breathtaking views of the scenery in Sligo and Leitrim. Can you feel it? That's what magic feels like. DraĂocht✹

Hawthorn trees have been in full bloom since I arrived, and now I’m observing the petals gently float to the earth like snowflakes. Beautiful and magical trees with strong crooked branches and delicate flowers. In Irish folklore, the Whitethorn, also known as Hawthorn or May tree, holds a significant place, associated with fairies, spirits, and mystical beings. The Hawthorn is considered to be a gateway between this world and the Otherworld, the realm of the Sídhe (Fairies). You’ll often see Hawthorns at the entry or perimeter of historic sites, stone monuments, or holy wells, and other liminal spaces. Believed to be a sacred tree, disturbing or cutting one down can bring bad luck or anger the fairies. I’m told you shouldn’t bring the flowers indoors for this reason. Many people in Ireland will not even trim a Hawthorn tree. One that stands alone is said to be protected by the Fae. Entire highways have been rerouted to avoid disturbance to these mythical trees.

In the ancient Ogham alphabet Hawthorn or HĂșath is associated with the letter “H”. Ogham was an old system of writing used for millennia. It is not a language per se, but rather a script developed to express the sounds of the earliest forms of the Irish language. Found engraved in caves and on standing stones, often used as markers or wayfarer indicators, other early original carvings on bone or wood are now long gone. Most of the symbols or Fid are connected to the sacred trees and shrubs of the Celtic Isles, they are grouped into clusters of Aicme, and can be used for divination purposes. For me, I have staves that were crafted here in the Isles made from the branches and twigs of the bushes and trees of the Ogham. I use them as part of my Celtic Reiki practice to connect myself and my client to these ancient lands and forests. Yesterday I had the pleasure of returning to CosĂĄn CiĂșin / Tranquil Paths in County Leitrim. I walked the Ogham forest, which owner and caretaker, Moya, stewards. It has an intense but peaceful energy and was nice to see how it has grown and matured since I last visited.

In Irish herbalism, the Hawthorn holds medicinal properties. The leaves, flowers, and berries have been used for centuries to support heart health and promote emotional well-being. It is considered a sacred and potent herb, known for its ability to calm the mind and heal the spirit. I have a cherished Hawthorn tincture for heart health that took nine months to brew. Aoife, the herbalist who creates it, was taught the proper technique and ritual to carefully hand-gather and extract the essence from the blossoms, the leaves, and the berries over the tree’s annual life cycle from Bealtaine to Samhain to ceremonially and respectfully create this special remedy.

The Hawthorn's presence in Irish landscape and lore is a testament to the deep connection the people here have between the natural world and the spiritual realm.

Ballykeel Dolmen 5,000-6,000 years old! A Neolithic portal tomb that sits at the base of Slieve Gullion in South Armagh, Northern Ireland. I have visited this ancient site with my family each time I’ve come to Ireland. It now feels like a right of passage to come here and say hello to the stones and ancestors. This Dolman is special to me, it is where I first fell in love with Neolithic archaeology and mythology as a teenager. The Ring of Gullion, mountain views and surrounding Mourne range, are some of the highest peaks on the island, and the backdrop to the landscape where the Murray clan has lived and farmed for generations in and around Cullyhanna, County Armagh. It is nice to bee back.

🐑 Historic Leck Farm in the Boyne Valley, is such a comforting place to return to in County Meath, Ireland. Greeted by cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, numerous barn swallows, the occasional hedgehog, and a gorgeous highland cow named Ruby. Farmed for generations, the sense of tradition, pride, and connection is clearly instilled in the family that continues to steward these lands and tend to the animals, heritage buildings, and 12th century cemetery here. Alison runs the AirBnB on site including an old beautifully maintained farm house, as well as the converted grain-shed apartment/cottage unit I’m staying in again this year. Adjacent to the River Boyne and views overlooking the pastures, animals and the ancient megalithic monument of Newgrange, this place is full of character and one of a kind! There is peaceful energy in the walls, land, and the people. It feels good to be back! Alison also operates a quaint Irish craft shop, featuring her woollen products and local artisan gifts and treasures. It is a pleasure to watch her work and witness and learn about handcrafts, designs and techniques that have been passed down through lineage. If you ever go to the UNESCO world heritage site at BrĂș na BĂłinne Visitor Centre be sure to also call-in to Boyne Valley Wools up the road. If you’re lucky Ruby, the Diva, might just decide to photobomb your sunset picture too! Watch out Celtic Goddesses there’s a new Queen of the Boyne 👑

A day spent among the giants! The great mounds of BrĂș na BĂłinne: SĂ an BhrĂș (Newgrange) and CnĂłbha (Knowth). Visiting these ancient Irish sites under moody stormy skies added to the energy and atmosphere to revere and reflect on their sacredness, and the remarkable feats of engineering, faith and spirituality that inspired our Neolithic ancestors to create these magnificent monuments thousands of years ago to align with the cycles of the earth and cosmos, and honour the Goddess. Again I'm left humbled and in a complete state of awe and wonderment. What a joy to have my feet on the soil, lay hands on the stones and feel the heartbeat of this land once again 💚

"Sound & Sensory Sarah" that's what one of the staff said when she bumped into me at the Gardens of Peterborough recently. I loved that! Sound, Sensory and Sylvotherapy (nature-infused programming) is the heart of my work with SORCHA CIRCLE. Activating our senses and connecting people to the natural world, wild landscapes, animals, plants and all the elements. That can look like bringing the outdoors in, wild-crafting, touching the textures of nature, listening to the sounds, or physically getting outdoors for a little forest bathing. This work calls back to my early days as a Park Naturalist and Guide, a role I adored. Plan to get outside and enjoy Mother Earth and our beautiful surroundings this weekend! đŸ„ŸđŸŒŽđŸŒ±
