MYTH vs. FACT: How does laser tattoo removal actually work?

MYTH: The laser simply “removes” the tattoo ink during your appointment.

FACT: The process is much more interesting.

Laser energy is selectively absorbed by tattoo pigment, creating very rapid effects that fragment the pigment into smaller particles. Your body then plays an important role in the fading process, with immune cells—including macrophages—helping process and transport fragmented pigment over time.

This is one reason tattoo removal is a gradual process rather than something that happens immediately after the laser fires.

How quickly a tattoo responds can depend on several factors, including:

• Ink colour and composition
• Pigment density and depth
• Professional vs. amateur tattooing
• Tattoo location
• Age of the tattoo
• Individual biological response
• Laser wavelength and treatment parameters

Different pigments absorb different wavelengths of light, which is also why some colours can be considerably more challenging to treat than others.

Multiple treatment sessions are typically required, and complete clearance cannot be guaranteed.

The goal is controlled, progressive fading while minimizing unnecessary injury to the surrounding skin.
