Stem-cells Successfully Treat Anosmia in Mice
Anosmia, the inability to smell, affects approximately 15% of the US population and can result from various factors such as colds, head trauma, and genetic disorders. This condition can lead to several unfortunate consequences, including loss of appetite, alterations in food taste, and difficulty detecting dangerous odors like smoke or chemicals. Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine conducted a study demonstrating the effectiveness of cellular replacement therapy in improving the sense of smell in mice with non-functioning sensory neurons. Using a genetic mouse model lacking cilia on olfactory sensory neurons, which impairs their ability to smell, the researchers administered nose drops containing globose basal cells, stem cells capable of replacing damaged or old olfactory sensory neurons.
