Sulfites are sulfur-based chemical compounds that occur naturally in certain foods and the human body, or are added to food and beverages as preservatives.

Respiratory problems: Wheezing, chest tightness, coughing, and severe asthma attacks can occur, especially in 5% to 10% of people who already have asthma.

Skin flare-ups: Hives, itching, redness, and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue may appear quickly after consumption.

Digestive upset: Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea can happen if the digestive system reacts poorly to the additive.

Circulatory issues: Dizziness, flushing, and a dangerous drop in blood pressure can sometimes develop.

Potassium bromate (KBrO₃) is a chemical compound commonly used as a flour additive and dough conditioner to strengthen dough, improve texture, and increase the volume of baked goods like bread.

Why should it be cautioned??

Classified as a suspected or genotoxic carcinogen that can damage DNA.

Toxicity: Can cause kidney damage, hearing loss, and gastrointestinal irritation at high exposure levels.

Cellular Damage: Acts as a strong oxidizer that causes oxidative stress and genotoxicity.

So why is this in food?

Carrageenan is a natural food additive extracted from red seaweed (also known as Irish moss) used to thicken, stabilize, and emulsify processed foods.

Some studies link it to gut inflammation and digestive distress.

Gut Inflammation: Cell and animal studies show that carrageenan can trigger intestinal inflammation and disrupt tight cell junctions, which may lead to a “leaky gut”.

Digestive Flare-Ups: People with sensitive stomachs, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often report bloating, cramps, or diarrhea after eating it.
