“Look at this fat plug!”

I see moms proudly sharing photos of the thick layer of fat that separates at the top of their pumped milk.

I see others commenting:
“Wow! How did you do that?”
“What did you eat to make your milk so fatty?”

But here’s the thing: you don’t need to make your milk “fattier.”

Human milk is not a recipe that needs to be optimized. It is a living, dynamic food that is perfectly designed for your baby.

The amount of fat in pumped milk can vary for many reasons — including the time of day, how long it has been since the last feed or pump, and how much milk was removed from the breast. A visible fat layer is not a measure of how “good” or “nutritious” your milk is.

Every breastfeeding parent makes the right milk for their baby.

And this is one of the truly amazing things about lactation: parents nursing twins, or tandem nursing children of different ages, can produce milk that meets the needs of each child — even from different breasts at the same time.

Your body is constantly responding to your baby’s needs. There is no special food, drink, supplement, or “hack” you need to make your milk better.

Your body already knows what to do. ❤️

Many parents have heard that newborns need to feed every three hours. Unfortunately, this can lead to some confusion.

For healthy newborns, three hours is the maximum amount of time we want between the start of one feeding and the start of the next – not the goal.

It's completely normal and expected for newborns to breastfeed 10–14 times (or even more!) in a 24-hour period.

Frequent feeding isn't a sign that something is wrong. It's exactly how newborns establish a healthy milk supply, regain their birth weight, and receive the comfort and regulation that they need from their parent.

So if your newborn seems to want to nurse "all the time," there's a good chance they're doing exactly what they're born to do. ❤️

If you're wondering whether your little one is feeding well or getting enough milk, I'd be happy to help.

A comfortable latch isn't just about protecting mom's ni***es. It's an important sign that baby is attached well enough to remove milk efficiently.

Painful latches are common, but they are not normal. Breastfeeding is meant to be comfortable and enjoyable for babies AND moms.

When breastfeeding hurts, parents often shorten feeds, delay the next feed, or start to dread feeding altogether. This can lead to less milk to baby and less milk supply over time.

A mother’s comfort is crucial to breastfeeding success.

If you’re a parent dealing with uncomfortable feeds, please reach out. I’d love to help you.

Many new parents have no prior experience with babies and breastfeeding. They know that “breast is best”, but they’ve often never even seen it done in real life before they’re handed their own baby.

Small changes in the way you hold your baby or recognize cues can have a huge impact on breastfeeding.

When I support families, I'm not just looking for major feeding challenges. I'm also looking for those little opportunities to make each feed more comfortable, more effective, and less stressful.

Those small changes can add up to a much more enjoyable breastfeeding journey.

Side-lying is one of my favourite breastfeeding positions to teach.

It can be calming for babies, restful for parents, and a total game-changer during cluster feeding and overnight feeds.

That said, it isn't always intuitive at first. A lot of parents struggle to get a deep, comfortable latch in this position—and that's where a few small adjustments can make a huge difference. I love sharing the little tricks that help it click.

Once you get it, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.

If you're in Ottawa or Outaouais and side-lying just isn't working for you, I'd love to help.

When it comes to milk supply, how often milk is removed matters more than how long each feeding or pumping session lasts.

For example, if you're trying to increase your milk supply, pumping for 10 minutes, 5 times a day is generally more effective than pumping for 25 minutes, twice a day.

This is one reason babies often cluster feed—those frequent, shorter feeds send repeated signals to your body to keep making milk.

Whenever possible, follow your baby's feeding cues and offer the breast often. Babies are usually very good at telling us what they need. ❤️

Did someone tell you that your baby needs to take THE WHOLE AR**LA in their mouth?

Okay, so first of all, this is not necessary – and second of all, it is not always possible.
Areolas come in many different sizes so this is not a great indicator for judging a latch.

Babies do need a mouthful - that’s for sure. And the bigger the mouthful, the more comfortable and effective the latch.

What does a good latch look like? You’ll see baby’s chin pressed into the breast, mouth open wide, lips neutral or flanged outward, and the head slightly tilted back.

Breastfeeding in a heatwave? ☀️

Your baby may ask to nurse more often.
These shorter, more frequent feeds are a normal way for babies to stay hydrated and comfortable when temperatures rise.

Trust your baby's cues.
