June is National Indigenous History Month.

OHSNI recognizes and celebrates the rich histories, cultures, knowledge systems, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Indigenous Peoples have long demonstrated deep understandings of health, wellness, healing, and community care – knowledge that continues to shape healthcare practices and improve outcomes today. We also recognize the growing contributions of Indigenous physicians, nurses, researchers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and healthcare leaders who are advancing culturally safe care across Canada.

With National Indigenous Peoples Day upcoming, we want to take this opportunity to acknowledge our commitment to health equity, reconciliation, and meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities.

For over 20 years, OHSNI has been dedicated to providing timely, compassionate, and culturally responsive care to Nunavummiut.⁣

Northern realities mean Nunavut residents often must travel thousands of kilometres for treatments. Our goal is to ensure their travel is as stress-free and efficient as it can be, while making follow-ups easier and more efficient.

OHSNI connects Nunavummiut to vital, life-enhancing care. ⁣

We partner with Northern patients and their families, Northern practitioners, and Southern practitioners, connecting patients to care they need. Our team facilitates medical travel and appointments in the South and arrange specialty medical clinics in the Baffin Region, providing service in each patient’s language of choice (English or Inuktitut). We’re dedicated to bridging geographic differences and ensuring that stays in Ottawa are as efficient and as short as possible.

On National Indigenous Languages Day, we recognize the importance of preserving and celebrating Indigenous languages as a vital part of culture, identity, and community well-being.⁣

At OHSNI, we are proud to offer services in English and Inuktitut, helping ensure Inuit patients and families can access care in a language that is familiar and meaningful to them. Providing services in Inuktitut strengthens communication, builds trust, and helps us deliver culturally respectful care to the communities we serve.⁣

Language connects us to culture, to one another, and to better health outcomes. Today, we celebrate the richness and importance of Indigenous languages.

At OHSNI, social workers play an essential role in supporting clients and strengthening community connections across Ottawa. By building lasting relationships with returning clients and working closely with community partners, OHSNI social workers help ensure individuals receive the care, programming, and referrals they need.⁣

Through collaboration in outreach, services, and community initiatives, our social workers continue to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve. As we wrap up National Social Work Month, we want to recognize our dedicated social workers for the compassion and commitment they bring to the OHSNI team every day.⁣

Today marks World Social Work Day.⁣

We are proud to highlight the important role OHSNI social workers play in supporting northern patients and families. Their compassion, advocacy, and guidance help individuals navigate services, access care, and stay connected to their communities. Today, and every day, we thank our social workers for the essential role they play not only on the OHSNI team, but all around for the meaningful difference they make in families' lives.
