Have you ever picked up a prescription and been handed something with a different name than what your doctor prescribed?

That is generic substitution — and it is completely standard practice in Ontario. In most cases, the generic medication your pharmacist dispenses contains the exact same active ingredient as the brand-name version, at the same dose, and has been approved by Health Canada as bioequivalent. The lower cost reflects a different manufacturing model, not a difference in quality.

A few things worth knowing:

Ibuprofen is the generic. Advil and Motrin are brand names for it. Store-brand ibuprofen is the same molecule at a lower price.

For most medications, generic and brand name work the same way. For a small category of drugs with a narrow therapeutic window — some thyroid, blood-thinning, and anti-seizure medications — consistency of brand can matter. Your pharmacist can tell you whether your medication falls into that category.

When you’re feeling unwell, you can see a doctor quickly without an appointment. Most days, there’s room for you when you arrive, and there’s no need to stand in line in the cold or the rain. When you register, we’ll let you know whether it’s safe to step out for errands or if you should stay nearby, so you don’t have to wait for hours in a crowded waiting room with others who may be sick.

The Centrum Pharmacy Walk-In Clinic runs from 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM based on doctor availability.

There is a tick that can make you allergic to red meat. It's called the lone star tick, and the condition it causes — alpha-gal syndrome — is expanding its range into Canada.

Alpha-gal syndrome develops after a lone star tick bite sensitizes the immune system to a sugar molecule found in mammalian flesh. After that, eating beef, pork, lamb, or other red meat triggers an allergic reaction. The reaction is delayed — appearing two to six hours after eating — which is why most people don't immediately connect the two and why the condition is frequently missed.

The lone star tick is not established in Ontario but has been detected here. The risk is currently low and rising, particularly for people who travel to the United States.

A few things worth knowing:

The bite itself often goes unnoticed. Check thoroughly after any time outdoors in wooded areas, especially after travel to endemic US regions.

The delayed reaction pattern is unusual for a food allergy. If you're having unexplained allergic reactions hours after eating red meat, alpha-gal should be on the list.

In Ontario, tick bites can be assessed at Centrum Pharmacy under the Minor Ailment Program — no doctor's appointment needed.
