Centrum Pharmacy proudly celebrates Roy Allen — a beloved longtime member of the "Centrum family" — who just made Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend history.

On Saturday, Roy completed the Ottawa 5K at 100 years old, finishing in 1:47:19 with family members walking alongside him as "Team 100." Race organizers confirmed he is now the oldest person, and the first centenarian, ever to complete the event.

Roy raised more than $12,000 for four organizations supporting seniors and dementia care in Ottawa — a testament to the kind of person he is.

His story is an incredible reminder of the importance of:

✅ Maintaining healthy habits
✅ Community connection
✅ Resilience and purpose at every age

Today, May 28, is World Hunger Day. Food insecurity is not just a global problem. Over four million Canadians live in food-insecure households, and the Ottawa Food Bank supports tens of thousands of people in our community every month.

Many common drugs require food for safe use or proper absorption, including metformin, NSAIDs, iron supplements, and fat-soluble vitamins. Patients who cannot consistently eat before their doses face real clinical risks, from side effects that interrupt adherence to absorption problems that quietly reduce effectiveness. When you’re feeling unwell, you can see a doctor quickly without an appointment. Most days, there’s room for you when you arrive, and there’s no need to stand in line in the cold or the rain. When you register, we’ll let you know whether it’s safe to step out for errands or if you should stay nearby, so you don’t have to wait for hours in a crowded waiting room with others who may be sick.

The Centrum Pharmacy Walk-In Clinic runs from 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM based on doctor availability.

We want to share something that happened recently, because the lesson from it is worth knowing.

A patient came to us after accidentally applying a fast-bonding adhesive to her eye. She had reached for her eye drops in a hurry and grabbed the wrong bottle. The packaging was nearly identical.

She was going to be okay. But it was a genuinely frightening situation, and it could have been avoided.

This particular mix-up is more common than most people realize. Eye drop bottles and adhesive products often look almost identical: same size, same shape, same kind of cap.

A few habits that matter:

🔴 Keep medications completely separate from household products. Different shelf, different drawer.
🔴 Read the label every single time before applying anything near your eyes or mouth. Every time, not most times.
🔴 Apply medications in good light. Turn the light on. Thirty seconds.
🔴 If this does happen: warm compresses, gentle warm water flush, get to a pharmacist or physician immediately. Do not force the eye open. Do not use solvents.

Your pharmacist can also help with medication organization, storage advice, and blister packaging for patients managing multiple medications.
