There's nothing like coming in from the bitter cold to a delicious cooked meal that warms you from the inside out!
Eating warm, cooked foods in the wintertime may seem like common sense, but as we explored in our first Winter Health Tip, our access to out-of-season foods has confused this natural inclination.
This is the season to lean into nourishing proteins, root vegetables & warming spices that are prepared in nutrient dense and ultra-digestible formats, like soups, stews, curries, chilis, congees, etc.
Warming foods in Chinese Medicine range from sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, lamb, chicken & lentils to oats, millet, brown rice, walnuts & sesame seeds. A simple Google Search of "Warm Foods in Chinese Medicine" can help you identify which foods to bring centre stage this winter.
A little bit of spice is good, particularly ginger, garlic & cinnamon. Other warming spices include cloves, turmeric, black pepper & star anise. These are nostalgic combinations, often already found in traditional holiday cooking, from stuffing to gingerbread cookies to spiced bone broths, even in your Oat Chai Latte!
Also, if your sinuses or head feel congested from the cold, then chili peppers & spring onions can help open the sinuses & disperse the cold-damp.
