The Centre for Health Innovation The CHI provides evidence-informed integrative medicine, research, and education across the spectrum of health care conditions.

Our approach emphasizes quality of life, support for the body, care of the spirit, and active prevention of disease The Centre for Health Innovation very recently came into being on October 15, 2020. This is the new home for the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre and expands on the services provided to a wide array of chronic and acute health conditions that can be helped through integrative medicine. Our website provides a much richer description of the services and practitioners available for support. Please check this out at www.thechi.ca . With respect to cancer care, our team works with patients and their families to help decrease the side effects of cancer treatment; improve the energy, well being and overall quality of health; balance the body’s immune system; support the mind, body and spirit in the healing process; and provide strategies (support) for cancer prevention and health maintenance. We do this through nutrition and lifestyle counselling, Intravenous (IV) therapy, registered massage therapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.

“As a newly diagnosed lung cancer patient, the fear of the unknown was immeasurable. Yoga Therapist Anne Pitman has a calm and gentle way of teaching. The relaxing exercises Anne taught were so valuable. It was most helpful to be able to discuss with other lung cancer patients the fear, concerns, medical issues in the most warm and supportive environment. I have learned much during this program, mostly not to be afraid and to find comfort and solace in the presence of other cancer patients. Anne has been a super facilitator and supporter. Thank you for allowing me to participate in this wonderful program. I know it would help so many more patients.” ~Ute

Together at the Lake: Celebrating a 15-Year Journey of Care

Surrounded by tall trees and overlooking the calm, open water, the CHI team gathered for a cottage retreat this summer to celebrate 15 years of care, innovation and impact while helping to shape our next chapter.

The CHI’s whole-person approach grew from the pioneering work of the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre. Its vision was to care for the person, not only the diagnosis. This created the foundation on which the CHI continues to build.

Six years ago, the CHI extended this same whole-person philosophy beyond cancer care to people with a much broader range of health needs. Today, patients continue to come to the CHI for support during and after cancer treatment, while others seek care across a broad spectrum of needs, including chronic and complex conditions, persistent symptoms, rehabilitation, stress and emotional well-being, healthy aging, health maintenance and prevention.

Our purpose remains consistent: to listen, look at the fuller picture and help each patient move toward the health and quality of life that matter to them.

Like the view across the lake, the future feels open.

Our journey of care continues, guided – as it always has been – by listening to what people need.

Anne Pitman's Fear of Cancer Recurrence + Progression program begins Thursday, October 1st.

In her latest blog, Anne reflects on the pilot program and shares how yoga therapy practices can support individuals living with the fear of cancer recurrence and progression.

"Instead of banishing fear, we instead feed it with good nourishment for body, mind and spirit, through practice and in community." -- Anne Pitman

Fear of recurrence and progression is a common experience following cancer treatment. Through community discussion and practices including movement, breathwork, meditation, and visualization, participants are invited to develop a different relationship with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty.

If you or someone you know is navigating the uncertainty that can follow a cancer diagnosis and treatment, we invite you to explore Anne's reflections and learn more about the upcoming program.

You have likely heard that October is breast cancer awareness month, but did you know that August 18th was named World Breast Cancer Research Day (WBCR Day)? The Susan Love Foundation chose this date to symbolize the 1 in 8 women and (less commonly) the 1 in 833 men who are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
