Why does measuring health inequalities matter?

Because health equity means everyone has a fair chance to reach their best health.

Across Canada, many people struggle to get the care they need because of where they live, how much money they make or the language they speak. These barriers are unfair, and many are preventable.

That’s why we provide health systems with data broken down by population groups to measure and monitor health inequalities. We call this equity stratification, and we routinely report by age, gender or s*x, urban versus rural/remote location, and income.

We’ve also developed this toolkit to help analysts, researchers and health system advisors with measuring and reporting on health inequalities: https://ow.ly/gHbE50Z4OcU

The month of June is National Indigenous History Month and also the start of Pride Season.

During this time, we recognize the contributions that Indigenous Peoples and people in 2SLGBTQ + communities make to enriching society.

While these communities are individual and distinct, they also intersect. We encourage you to take some time to learn more about two-spirit people — a term used by Indigenous Peoples in North America to describe a person with both masculine and feminine spirits — and the role colonization has played in negatively impacting q***r and gender-diverse people in Indigenous communities.

Is the supply of health care providers keeping pace with the mental health and substance use (MHSU) needs of Canadians?

Despite supply increases in psychotherapists and social workers, vacancies among psychologists, psychotherapists and social workers remain high.

And though the number of family physicians and pediatricians providing psychotherapy shows minimal change, the volume of psychotherapy/counselling visits conducted by these providers has increased considerably, suggesting they are filling an important gap amid growing demand.

This isn’t just a workforce issue. It’s also an access issue.

Behind every vacancy is someone waiting longer, navigating more barriers or going without care altogether.

Our latest report describes what we know — and what we don’t — about the regulated MHSU workforce in Canada, the services they deliver and recent data on service access: https://ow.ly/O5na50Z4s7R

Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicide victims, and 11% of missing women, yet Indigenous people make up only 4.3% of the population of Canada.

May 5 marks Red Dress Day, a day of awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit Peoples (MMIWG2S+).

This day reflects an ongoing reality: First Nations, Inuit and Métis women and girls face disproportionate violence in Canada, and many cases are underreported or missing from data systems. Gaps like this matter. They shape what we see and what we fail to see.

Today take a moment to remember, and to reflect on what needs to change.

: Mental health is health. A smile may be hiding stress. Silence may be covering anxiety.

Our most recent data release on child and youth mental health shows that

*️⃣ Rates of people age 5 to 24 visiting emergency departments for mental health concerns and being hospitalized for them have declined overall for the past 5 years
*️⃣ However, the rates of children and youth of that same age visiting physicians and being dispensed psychotropic medications for mental health have increased

Your feelings are real. Your story matters. You are not alone.

Votre histoire compte. Vous n’êtes pas seul.
