Summer is the peak travel season around the world and given the opportunity to take extended trips when school-aged children are on summer break. When you get braces, however, travel can become a little more difficult. Here are some tips for caring for your braces while traveling this summer.

Pack Floss Threaders:

It is easy to pick up an extra toothbrush or toothpaste if you forget yours at home, but floss threaders can be more challenging to find. These threaders are critical for getting floss between the wires of your braces, allowing you to sweep food particles from between your teeth. Pack a little dental hygiene kit before you go to ensure that you have all of the things you need to keep your teeth healthy.

Avoid Road Trip Snacks:

Gas station stops on road trips often result in a pile of chips, gum, beef jerky, or sugary drinks that can be bad for braces. Whenever possible, avoid eating these foods, as they can damage your braces and increase your risk of tooth decay. Instead, pack a cooler full of healthy snacks before you leave on your trip. String cheese, sliced fruit, or summer sausage make excellent treats that are safe for your braces when you are on the road.

Be Prepared For A Braces Emergency:

Sometimes, emergencies happen at the worst times. You may take a bite of food, only to find one of your braces wires popping loose. To prepare for this type of event, have the contact information for an orthodontist in the area you are traveling.

Pack Orthodontic Wax:

Especially if you are new to wearing braces, they can irritate soft tissues from time to time. As your teeth shift, your braces may cause mild irritation of your cheeks or gums. Dental wax is the best way to reduce this irritation, as it protects your soft tissues against the hard components of your braces. Pack some dental wax just in case, and apply a small piece to the area that is causing abrasion.

Keep Acetaminophen On Hand:

As your braces realign your teeth, you may occasionally experience minor aches or pains. You don’t want these to disrupt your vacation. Not only are over-the-counter painkillers good for managing orthodontics-related pain, but they are great for headaches and other minor pains that could disrupt your trip.

Traveling with braces doesn’t have to be a pain if you take the necessary precautions.

We hope you have a great summer !

For many of our patients, it's official - Spring Break is here! This is quite a popular time to take a vacation, often escaping our normal routines. Are you planning to hit the beach or take a road trip?

If you're planning to do any traveling, we want to encourage you with some helpful tips to keep up with your orthodontic and dental hygiene routine. Whether you wear traditional braces, orthodontic appliances, Invisalign or retainers, you'll want to pack more than just your toothbrush!

INVISALIGN PATIENTS:
Always take your previous set of aligners, your current set, and your next set of aligners with you.

Always carry your aligners in your purse or carry-on luggage when flying in case your luggage gets lost.

Bring your toothbrush and toothpaste.

Only when brushing is inconvenient between meals, make sure you rinse out your mouth and aligners before reinserting into your mouth.

BRACES PATIENTS:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Floss and threaders
Orthodontic wax
Proxy brush
Rubber bands (if required)
Tylenol if you have had a recent adjustment

Do you have gorgeous straight teeth? Congratulations! This means you've completed your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers.

REMOVABLE RETAINERS:
Most important - remember to bring your retainers and always carry them in your purse or carry-on luggage when flying in case your luggage gets lost.

Retainer case

Toothbrush and toothpaste

BONDED RETAINERS:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Floss and threaders

We hope these tips help you with your packing while making your Spring Break plans. Wishing you all safe travels!
