UA Canada is heartbroken by Friday’s shooting at UA Local 488 and the Alberta Pipe Trades College in Edmonton, where one life was lost.

Our deepest condolences go to the family and loved ones of the person who passed away. We are also thinking of the members, staff, instructors and students of Local 488 who were there that morning or who are carrying the weight of this loss.

The UA is one family from coast to coast, and we stand together with Local 488, ready to help however we can in the days ahead.

Tradeswomen Build Nations 2026 is here, and the UA showed up with the largest delegation of any union. That's over 1,000 strong women—plumbers, pipefitters, welders, sprinkler fitters and HVACR techs from across North America—here to learn, lead and lift each other up.

We're proud to stand with every one of them.

Every year on September 30th, we reaffirm our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. While this work continues in how we move forward every day, it allows us to reflect on the work that has been done, and to continue working on what we have yet left to do.

We are proud to partner together with First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities across these beautiful lands, building meaningful relationships and creating lasting opportunities for careers in the piping industry. Together, we continue to strengthen these partnerships on the path of reconciliation.

Today we find ourselves in Nisku, just outside of Edmonton, Alberta, to attend RMD welding and prep machine training at RMS Welding Systems. This is the biggest training event in UA Canada’s history, with 50 welders and 12 fitters attending.

This course, funded through the National Pipeline Training Fund, is setting our membership up for success on the upcoming ATCO pipeline project and future projects.

The World Trade Center was built to mean something. According to its architect, it was to be "a living symbol of man's dedication to world peace." The flags of dozens of nations hung inside.

2,977 people were killed on September 11, 2001. Those who died came from more than 90 countries. Twenty-four were Canadian. Our nation stood still, many of us watching live—and then we did what could. Canada opened its airports and hockey arenas, church basements and spare bedrooms, to tens of thousands of stranded travellers.

In the years since, many more lives have been lost to exposure experienced during rescue and other efforts at Ground Zero.

If that day taught us anything, it was that we are more alike than different.

We will never forget.

The rights that workers enjoy were fought for and won by generations of men and women who stood together and demanded better. UA Canada honours their efforts by continuing to stand for good jobs, fair wages, safe workplaces, and a strong future for working families across Canada. We also celebrate the UA sisters and brothers who helped build this country—and those who continue building it every day.
