I don’t usually do tattoos this small — especially when it comes to black & grey realism.

This one was actually a humbling experience for me. Working at a smaller scale reminded me just how important patience, precision, and restraint are. There’s less room for error, and every feather, shadow, and transition has to be carefully placed to keep the tattoo readable without losing the realism.

Sometimes the smaller pieces challenge you just as much as the big ones — just in a completely different way.

Always learning. Always pushing to get better. 🦅

People always ask why I use so much black in a black and grey realism tattoo.

Because without it, your tattoo can start looking like it was shaded with a dusty pencil.

Black creates the depth, contrast and structure that make the lighter grey tones actually stand out. It pushes the shadows back, pulls the main subject forward and helps the tattoo stay readable as it ages.

The goal isn’t to make the whole tattoo dark. It’s knowing where to place the black so the realism hits properly and still looks strong years later.

Basically, black is doing the heavy lifting while grey gets all the compliments.
