Think back on your most painful day while grieving, what do wish people had done to support you?

I didn’t choose a day, I chose a time of day and a place, but I was lucky in that I got the exact support I needed.

Someone who is grieving does not need to be “fixed”, they need patience, love, to be seen and to be understood.

Our job is to let them lead and to let them know that they’re not alone.

The poetry that Sara Rian writes can make you feel seen in such a startling way. I don’t mean this to sound negative, I mean that you feel laid bare, as if someone looked inside you and saw the things that you thought you had safely hidden. This is comforting, to think that you are not alone in your thoughts and feelings, but also startles you because you weren’t sure you wanted to share that part of you.

Sara Rian was drawn to grief poetry since her mother’s death in 2018 and since that time has self-published eight books of poetry. Her experience of being a su***de loss survivor and having carried that grief for eight years makes her words so authentic and powerful.

Sara Rian has published eight books of poetry since her mother’s death in 2018 and there is a depth of feeling and an understanding of grief that lives in every word.

If you can, look her up and I can guarantee that you will feel less alone.

When we think of our emotions as good and bad, I think we automatically decide which ones are okay to share, which of them are palatable to others. In doing this, the ones that remain hidden gather shame and these are precisely the ones that need tending to.
