Back again at the .cna fourth stage (swipe to see the vibe of this beautiful space while we were setting up) to talk about nutrition in mid-life and answer Q+As. The takeaway of this presentation and the conversations I have with patients about sustainable dietary patterns is:

1) choose 1-2 “small” but strategic things to focus on ADDing into your nutrition. We did a more depth dive into the Mediterranean diet and how to increase your protein. 💪🏻 🫒🧄🍓🐟

2) how to experiment in the kitchen and make meal time less stressful! 🍽️🏠

Thank you to the NAC wellness committee, 4th stage tech team, and francophone co-host Kelly for being so lovely to work with.

It finally feels like summer with the first substantial garden harvest and the looming end of school! Happy belated summer solstice. May your summer be equally bountiful in adventure and rest… because don’t we all need a little nervous system rehabilitation right now 🌱 💚

End of summer musings on hard or new things as an adult. 🪵🌱🚣🏼‍♀️ A few weeks ago, I packed my two kiddos and an obscene amount of stuffed animals into the car for a camping trip and big day paddle across two lakes. Was it beautiful? Yes! Was it ambitious, a ton of work and some struggle solo with young kids? Also yes. But so often as an adult, we create systems to self-select only into things that are known or easy for us, while we demand big risks and new things from our children, as if this is a rite of childhood we can cast off once established with the self-agency of an adult. If you ask your kids to do hard things (like going to summer camp or a new school where they don’t know anyone, or practicing riding a bike or sounding through reading for the first time), I think it’s important to model these challenges as adults to do hard things and to show our kids that we too experience frustration and use problem solving, creativity, and coping skills to overcome it. This is a topic that has come up in my consults recently, whether applying the Umbrella Project skills to the kids and teens in my practice or in adult consultations about mental and physical health. I assure you that this wisdom did not come innately to me. In fact, I once won a national oral speaking contest for my tongue-in-cheek written speech about being a perfectionist…. Precocious as a child, but maladaptive as an adult. Later this week, I’ll share some of my tips to doing this as an adult that I’ve learned through my personal experiences re-learning this as an adult and my professional clinical experience supporting people. What have you done this summer that was a leap for you or gave you a sense of accomplishment or pride?

Day of Action. I’m donating my billable hours income this week to the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health which provides services and community in my neighbourhood. I live and work across clinics on the traditional and unceeded territory of the Algonquin people. I’ve written about this before on July 1st, but a person with settler and recent immigrant family background, I am grateful and appreciative to live here, while also recognizing that I directly benefit from the injustices that happened and continue to happen. I have spent the last decade studying and learning from various medicinal traditions and herbalism to apply it to my understanding of the various mental, emotional, and physical health concerns of my patient practice. Much of what I have learned about using native plants comes from Indigenous knowledge… and much of this was taught to me by white male professors. The “holistic wellness” field flirts the line of cultural appropriate and while I try to use my knowledge of various forms of herbalism, of Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, and of other forms of listening to and understanding the body in a respectful way, I might not always get it right. I’m grateful for my access to this knowledge which is not always afforded to the people whose ancestors it originated, and which I use daily to support the health of and generate income for my family.

S E L F • C O M P A S S I O N • and • R E A L - L I F E • M A G I C 🎁⛄️ We’ve been having discussions in our household about “Santa magic” which is the ability in every person to think of what someone needs most *independent of the giver’s needs/wants* and tapping into that during the holidays. On reflection of this concept, my older kiddo is gifting their little sibling the chance to “choose the game” with them, which is not the usual play dynamic and sometimes the cause of many arguments 😊 Many of us for the last month+ have been doing the work of brainstorming and acquiring gifts for those on our lists. The Umbrella Project The Umbrella Project skill of the month is Self-Compassion. What if we were to apply the “Santa Magic” to ourselves? When was the last time you asked yourself “is this good for me?” or “Does this feel right for me?” or “Is this something I ‘should’ do or something I need to do?” Give YOURSELF the gift of SELF-COMPASSION this holiday. What would bring ease or joy? Don’t want to cook a turkey? Order in. Working hard on your health goals and feeling guilt about eating a week of Aunt Martha’s cookies? Eat the cookies and let that toxic mindset go. Don’t want to take on an extra project? Express gratitude that they thought of you and say no. Sometimes genuinely asking these questions and spending time IN our bodies is triggering and difficult and if this is you, you deserve to find yourself a trauma-informed provider. Sometimes we are really good at ignoring those nagging headaches, digestive upset, trouble sleeping, or general feeling of blah (I hear that one a lot). If your body is taking (or screaming) at you and you need help decoding the message, I’d love to be a part of your health strategy team to find your way back to balance and as your champion cheerleader of of everyday Magic of self-compassion 💫

Holidays are HARD. They’re wonderful, joyous, and special, but also busy, stressful, and stir up a lot of different feelings or memories for many. If you’re someone that has a million lists to get you through your plans (gift lists, grocery list, navigating get togethers...), but haven’t made a plan to care for YOURSELF though a challenging season, there’s a few weeks left to work together to come up with a strategic lifestyle/nutrition/maybe supplements plan to support you (website to book an appointment or Q+A to see if we’d be a good fit). This image is lighthearted but mental health is a serious topic. Don’t make medication or supplement changes you read on the internet or a Facebook group without checking with your healthcare provider first. Some things you can try right away: deep breathing, scheduling time to do nothing (yes, really, nothing!), time outside (dressed appropriately), practice saying “no” to things that take more than they give benefit. As we head into the season, take care of yourself ❤️

Kindness boomerangs! Sometimes when my kids are having a hard time, I hide a little note with a doodle, a simple phrase, or a sticker/smiley face into their lunchbox to make an extra “connection point” with them. Not often enough that’s it’s the norm, but instead (I hope) a fun surprise. This week I was telling my kids that it was a busy week, especially as we are packing for a move. I found this note 💪🏻☕️❤️ at my humble home workstation and I’m feeling the extra boost to get through the day! Parenting in a pandemic feels like such a slog. I salute all you parents and people finding ways to to bolster your kids and community through this difficult period. Have questions about assessing and building your family’s coping skills? Check out The Umbrella Project or book an appointment with me as an umbrella project practitioner, which I integrate into my work as as Naturopathic Doctor (booking links via website in comments). A few days ago was World Kindness but it’s an everyday thing. May you be the recipient of the kindness you put out in the world.

We remember.

Reflecting on the deep emotional cost and the ripple of intergeneration effects of service or of loving one in service and its effects on our physical and mental health today.

Feeling gratitude today to those that serve, those who have served, and those that supported loved ones in service.
