Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), is observed on May 5th. The day honours and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada. MMIWG2S is a human rights crisis of gender-based and racialized violence in Canada.
It also serves as a powerful reminder of the violence indigenous communities face in Canada and the need for more awareness, justice, and change.

In celebration of the Premiere of Bif Naked a Documentary, the hosted an intimate screening followed by a live acoustic performance and audience Q&A session.

Directed by Pollyanna Hardwicke-Brown, the film dives into Bif’s extraordinary journey through music, activism, and resilience, featuring rare archival footage, exclusive interviews, and performances. A must see!

I absolutely idolized Bif Naked as a teenager, devouring her videos on Much Music. I was in awe of her unapologetic badassery, a representation of women who were different and didn’t follow the crowd. Having the opportunity to meet and work with her was a moment in my career I will never forget. She is one of the most kind, thoughtful, caring, and warm people I have ever met.

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Shannon Prince this week. Shannon and her husband Bryan have dedicated their careers to the preservation and celebration of Black history. The list of her accomplishments and contributions is staggering. Not to mention her kind and fun loving personality.

Shannon Prince is a 6th generation descendant of residents of the Elgin Settlement and Buxton Mission, which was a haven for fugitive enslaved people prior to the American Civil War. She is the curator of the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum. Shannon Prince is also a member of several organizations in Canada and the United States that research and promote the North American story of enslavement and freedom, including the Underground Railroad and the American Civil War.

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process

This was my third year leading the Hair and Makeup team for the commemorative gathering on Parliament Hill. I am extremely grateful and honoured for this opportunity to be part of such an important day 🧡
