Hospice Nurse VS Death Doula
Coming from someone who is both! 🫶🏻

Imagine a client with advanced cancer. ⬇️

The hospice nurse: 👩‍⚕️
* Assesses pain.
* Adjusts medications.
* Teaches the family what changes to expect.

The death doula: 🧚‍♂️
* Helps the client write letters to their children.
* Creates a bedside vigil plan.
* Facilitates a family forgiveness conversation.
* Organizes music, readings, and rituals that reflect the person’s life.
* Remains present for emotional support when fear or uncertainty arise.

Together, they support the whole person: body, mind, heart, relationships, meaning, and legacy.

The perfect team!

This woman would make a wonderful death doula. Did you know- that HUMOR about death is not only a coping mechanism, a healing modality, but also such a positive way to be open and raw about the death experiences.

Humor also does something powerful in a room:
• Breaks tension instantly
• Gives others permission to relax
• Creates connection instead of fear

You’ve likely seen how one joke can shift an entire family dynamic at end of life.

Don’t be afraid / ashamed to laugh a little. Plus, none of us are getting out alive!

Did you know theres a lot more to planning end of life, than just having a living Will?

What is an Advance Care Plan?

Why is this important?
Imagine you had a fall, stroke, or a major medical emergency that resulted in you being in coma. Imagine you had a condition that changed your ability to make decisions or communicate your care needs.

Would your loved ones know what help or care you would want?
Or not want?
Would they know how to clearly speak on your behalf?

This is the importance of Advance Care Planning.

The death of your best friend.
We MUST face it. A life loved, is worth the sacrifice.
How do we prepare for such PAIN?

I must admit - I didn’t grieve deeply when my dog passed away.
My grief began when he was 7, and began to sleep a little more
I rushed him to the vet, just to check. “He’s just getting a little older.”
Reality kicked me in the face. That he wouldn’t be by my side forever.

I was consumed with grief for years.
“How will I survive this?”
“I don’t wan’t to live in a wold without him.”
“He’s the only love I’ve ever known.”
I would watch him sleep and quietly sob.

But the truth is, our animals are so. Much. Smarter. Than. Us.
Harlen wandered to his death like it was as normal as going for a walk.
He was ready, he was at peace and his body was tired.
He arrived without fear, and such an inner knowing.
He passed away in his bed, surrounded by love.
I watched the light behind his eyes, his soul energy, slowly drift away.

My boy, my fur son died July 26th 2024
I miss him with all my heart
But the moment he left his pain and weary bones behind
He set us both free.

✨ Ceremony in the Small Things ✨

Today I carried a little pocket-altar of love to the shoreline.

A mirror that belonged to my grandmother — holding years of softness, wisdom, and womanhood through generations.
A candle lovingly poured by my best friend — a reminder of devotion, warmth, and those who see me fully.
A moon snail gifted by my soul sister — a symbol of growth, sacred shell, and the quiet magic of being witnessed.

None of these were grand gestures. Nothing extravagant.
Just simple pieces infused with deep meaning.

I brought them to nature, to the water, to breathe and be still.
To remember that ceremony isn’t always ritual and smoke and bells.
Sometimes it’s a gentle arrival into our own life.
A moment to hold what matters.
A pause to feel love in physical form.

And there, with the sound of the waves, I felt held.
Celebrated.
At peace.

🌿✨ Tiny altar, big gratitude.
This is ceremony, too.
