✨ Please welcome Michelle Gilmore, RMT, to Star Lake Health Centre! ✨

I’m so excited to share that beginning September 11–13, Michelle will be joining us at Star Lake Health Centre one weekend each month, offering Registered Massage Therapy appointments on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

And this one feels a little extra special to me—Michelle and I actually went to massage therapy school together!
We both became RMTs in 2007, and nearly 20 years later, it feels pretty wonderful to be welcoming her into the clinic space.

Michelle brings years of experience and a thoughtful, individualized approach to treatment.
Her work may include deep tissue and Swedish massage, myofascial release, scar tissue therapy and pregnancy massage, depending on the needs and goals of each client.

In Michelle’s words:

“I believe massage therapy should be more than just a treatment. It should be a space where you feel heard, supported and cared for.”

She is also certified in Indie Head Massage—a deeply relaxing treatment focused on the head, scalp, face, neck and shoulders, making it a beautiful option for anyone looking to slow down, unwind and take some intentional time for themselves. 💆‍♀️

Michelle’s first weekend at Star Lake:

A little shout-out to Kacie In Motion Studio - Reformer Pilates at 💙

One of the best compliments I received this week had nothing to do with a number on a scale.

She looked at me before class today and said she could tell I’d been growing my glutes!

Translation: my glutes BE gulting!
🍑😂

I’ll take that win.

The funny part is that I haven’t been training for Pilates.

I’ve been strength training.

But coming back to her Reformer class reminded me that good movement carries over.

✅ A one-minute plank that felt solid.

✅ Better balance during single-leg work.

✅ More definition & strength through my shoulders, wrists, and hands.

✅ Improved control instead of just surviving every exercise.

Even the movements that had me silently negotiating with my inner thighs. 😅

It was such a good reminder that when you build strength in one place, it often shows up somewhere completely different.

That’s why I love mixing different styles of movement.

Strength training makes my Pilates better.

Pilates makes me more aware of how I move.

And together, they help me build a body I can trust—not just in the gym, but in everyday life.

I’m grateful to have instructors like Kacie who notice AND compliment the progress that can be easy to miss when you’re doing the work often on your own.

Sometimes someone else sees your progress before you do.

And that’s a pretty special gift.

It’s a little humbling to be on the other side of the treatment table.

After more than 20 years of helping people recover from injuries, this week it was my turn.

Injuries have a way of teaching us patience.
They remind us that healing isn’t about doing everything—or doing nothing. Most of the time, the answer lives somewhere in the middle.

Today’s workout wasn’t about getting stronger.
It was about moving well, paying attention, modifying what didn’t feel right, and reminding my body that it is still safe and capable.

This experience has also reminded me why I’m so passionate about teaching.

The reality is, I can only see so many people one-on-one.
Yet every day, countless people are living with back pain, foot pain, stiffness, or the fear of moving because they simply don’t know what’s safe anymore.

I’ve realized one of my favourite things to do is deconstruct complicated ideas.

I don’t think most people need more information—I think they need better explanations.

I love taking concepts like pain, movement, and rehabilitation and breaking them down into practical, bite-sized pieces that actually make sense and can be used in everyday life.

That’s exactly why I created my
Back-to-Basics workshop series.

It focuses on the foundations: your feet, your core, and your back—three areas that work together to support every step you take and nearly every movement you make.

My hope is simple: to help more people understand their bodies, move with greater confidence, and feel more capable in everyday life.

A couple of days ago, I could tell my low back needed my attention and a break.
🚨
So yes—I rested.
🛑
But rest isn’t the entire prescription.
🩺
As things settled down, I started asking my body questions:
❓
“Does this hurt?”
“Can I move this way?”
“What feels protective instead of provocative?”
🧐
What you’ll see in these clips isn’t a workout for the sake of working out.
🏋️‍♂️
It’s practice for real life.
🧘‍♀️
The squats lets me get laundry out of the dryer without rounding through my spine.
🛟
The lunges lets me get down to pack a suitcase while keeping my back in a strong, neutral position and letting my hips and legs do the work they’re designed to do.
🦺
This is exactly why I encourage people to practice these movements long before they “need” them.

Because one day you might!
😳
When an injury happens, your goal isn’t to prove how tough you are.
🫠
It’s to move intelligently.
For me, that meant reducing the load, slowing everything down, paying close attention to my form, and only choosing movements that my body was telling me it could tolerate comfortably.
If I was unsure, I’d have a chair or bench nearby for support.

Our bodies are remarkably good at giving us information when we’re willing to listen.

Mine told me that twisting, bending and lifting carelessly wasn’t a good idea right now.

It also told me that I was still capable of moving safely.

That’s the difference.

Strength isn’t just about lifting heavier weights.
🤘🏻
It’s about having the capacity to keep living your life—even when life throws you a sore back, a heavy laundry basket, or a suitcase that still needs packing.

Yesterday, my body reminded me that knowing what to do and actually doing it are sometimes two very different things.
🫠
While walking my dog, my low back suddenly seized up.
Every step required my full attention.
I found myself leaning on nearly twenty years of anatomy, massage therapy, and osteopathic knowledge just to walk safely back to my car.
😣
Today, I had to cancel my clients.
😬
As an entrepreneur, that means losing income.
But what surprised me most wasn’t the financial loss—it was how guilty I felt about letting people down.
😳
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
🤔
If one of my clients called to cancel because they had injured their back, I wouldn’t hesitate to tell them to stay home, rest, and take care of themselves.
😉
Yet offering myself that same compassion felt surprisingly difficult.
🤪
It made me realize something.
🤨
It’s easy to prioritize your health when you’re feeling good.
It’s much harder when taking care of yourself means changing your plans, slowing down, or challenging those deeply rooted beliefs that tell us our worth is tied to our productivity.
🙃
The body has a remarkable way of asking for what it needs.
Sometimes it whispers.
Sometimes it shouts.
🗣️
The harder part isn’t always knowing what to do.
✅
Sometimes the hardest part is giving yourself permission to do it.
🙏
So today, I’m choosing rest.
😌
Not because it’s easy.
🙂‍↔️
Because it’s what I’d recommend to every person who walks through my clinic doors.

Maybe the real practice isn’t just learning to listen to our bodies.
🧐
Maybe it’s learning to trust them.
🤯

This weekend, my husband and I visited my parents and had the chance to golf at Westmount Golf & Country Club — a course I first started playing when I was 12 years old.

There was something very full-circle about being back there now.
🏌🏻‍♀️
My dad is 79. My parents are in their mid-to-late 70s. And while they are still strong, capable, social, and active, I found myself very aware of the fact that opportunities like this are not guaranteed forever.
😳
A full day outside. Walking, swinging, laughing, eating dinner on the patio, enjoying beautiful weather, and spending time with the people who helped make me who I am.
💋
And I really like who I am.
😏
That feels worth saying.
🤘🏻
As we age, movement does not always have to look like a structured workout in a gym.
Sometimes it looks like golf. Sometimes it looks like walking a course, carrying clubs, getting in and out of carts, navigating uneven ground, sharing a meal afterward, and being socially connected while you do it.

One thing I have really come to appreciate is that our movement can shift with the seasons.

Summer gives us this beautiful invitation to get outside, be with people, play, walk, explore, and move in ways that are good for the body, but also deeply good for the mind and heart.

Golfing with my family this weekend reminded me that movement is not just about fitness.

It is about participation.

It is about being able to say yes.
🙌🏻
Yes to the walk.
Yes to the game.
Yes to the patio dinner.
Yes to time with people you love while the opportunity is still here.
👏
And honestly, that may be one of the most important reasons to keep taking care of our bodies in the first place.

So here’s to summer movement, family memories, beautiful golf courses, improving one swing at a time, and remembering that our bodies are not just here to be exercised.

A weekend visiting my parents meant a different bed, a different pillow, and my neck has been filing a formal complaint since Saturday.

Today’s workout reminded me that movement is not always about pushing harder.
Sometimes it’s about paying attention.
🤔
What triggered it?
What felt okay?
What needed to be modified?
What was my body actually asking for?

I did what I could, adjusted as I went, and left feeling proud—not because it was perfect, but because I stayed in conversation with my body, and did what I could with what I had available to me.

I’m not counting down the days until Wednesday when get to see my Osteopath again!

Sometimes the best parts of working in a small community are the unexpected little moments that roll right up to your doorstep.

Today at the Maple Lake Club House, we were lucky enough to catch one of the planned rest stops for members of the Horseless Carriage Club of Southern Ontario during their annual Spring Ride.

Their route brought them along Tally-Ho Swords Road to one of Seguin’s still-standing one-room schoolhouses — and suddenly the afternoon felt like stepping into a living piece of history.

Every one of these cars is from 1916 or earlier, and seeing them gathered here, tucked between the trees and the lake roads, was such a lovely reminder of how much character, history, and community lives in this area.

It’s one of the things I love most about working here: the clinic may be a place for health, movement, and care — but it also sits inside a community full of stories, charm, and unexpected magic.

A pretty special little rest stop, if you ask me.
