How can we do better for our first responders? Listen to this clip about the issues they face when services for PTSD are needed. Once you grasp their difficulties, envision how others in less prestigious jobs must struggle to get the help they need. It has been Premier Ford’s decision to underfund the public mental health services in favour of funding for-profit private corporations. Give us one good reason why we should accept his decision. It is refreshing when people in authority speak the truth about for-profit private healthcare. No one denies that we need to make adjustments to our public system. It is indisputable that a two-tier systems is not an improvement. It is in fact, a detriment to the health of Canadians.

Perhaps the Canadian Medical Association can have some influence on Prime Minister Carney’s failure to enforce the Canada Health Act. So far in Renfrew County, there are no medical doctors that we know of who have made a public stand to support the law. Could it be that they have a stake in the for-profit private healthcare where patients pay out of pocket for medical procedures?

The Alberta government has taken an extraordinary step toward an American-style health care system where doctors can work in public and private care. While this may be good news for the rich, it is bad news for most Albertans.

The federal government must stand up for accessible public health care and urge Alberta to reconsider this made-in-America approach.
