Well… it’s been a hot minute, I haven’t written here in a while. But really I’ve been busy living the things I usually come here to write about.
The seasons are changing, and I’ve been thinking a lot about that lately. How nothing in nature stays exactly as it is. We don’t ask the trees to hold onto every leaf. We understand that letting go is part of becoming what comes next.
There’s a bucket of w**d tea sitting in my backyard right now. It is, quite literally, a tub full of w**ds and water slowly turning into some of the best fertilizer I can make.
It makes me laugh a little because maybe that’s what we do too. We collect things. Experiences. Old stories. Things we were taught about ourselves. Things we inherited without ever really stopping to ask where they came from.
And then we spend so much energy trying to get rid of the parts that feel messy.
I’m thinking about that today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
About the roots we inherit, and the responsibility we have to look honestly at them. To listen to the stories that were silenced. To question what we have accepted simply because it has always been that way.
I think about this in my work every day.
The students I get to hold space for. The teachers I walk alongside. The parents who are doing their best while carrying things we may never see.
I know more and more that how I show up matters.
Sometimes the most important thing I can offer a child isn’t another strategy or intervention. It’s an adult who is willing to slow down, stay curious and see the whole human in front of them.
And maybe that is the heart of Root & Rise for me.
We are allowed to change with the seasons. I am certainly not the same person I was a year ago, and I hope I never am.
I want to keep unearthing what needs to be understood, letting go of what no longer belongs, and tending to the soil I’m standing in.
Because what we do with what we inherit matters and so does what we choose to grow from it.
