“If I’m breastfeeding, how do I know my baby is getting enough milk?”
This is one of the most common worries I hear from new parents - especially because you can’t see exactly how much milk your baby is taking in.
Here are 3 ways we look at whether feeding is going well:
1️⃣ Your baby has moments of contentment after feeds.
After feeding, your baby will often look relaxed, come off the breast on their own, and have stretches where they seem settled. That said, this alone isn’t a reliable indicator - some babies cluster feed or are just naturally a bit fussier, even when everything is going well.
2️⃣ Wet diapers are steadily increasing.
In the first few days:
- Day 1: at least 1 wet diaper
- Day 2: at least 2 wet diapers
- Day 3: at least 3 wet diapers
- Day 4: at least 4 wet diapers
- By around day 5-6: about 6+ heavy wet diapers every 24 hours
Lots of p*e is what we like to see 😂
3️⃣ Your baby’s weight follows a normal pattern over time
It’s completely normal for newborns to lose some weight in the first few days after birth. As milk volume comes in, babies usually start to turn the corner and begin gaining again. Most babies are back to their birth weight within the first couple of weeks, though there’s always a bit of normal variation.
Your baby’s doctor will check weight in those early days and weeks to make sure feeding is on track.
