“The Amazing BPS Racing Cane Challenge Canada”

This is the first and unique community event in Toronto for the Blind and Partially Sighted (BPS) who are active white can users to experience a fun and enjoyable Racing Day that will challenge their sense of direction, mobility, physical, mental, emotional and tactile abilities. Adapted from the very popular TV show “The Amazing Race”, this Event is organized by a legally blind Coordinator and an Orientation and Mobility Specialist for the BPS, who is also a Recreation Programmer, under the “Eye Believe Eye Can SEE” of Durham Centre for Excellence in partnership with “Raising Cane Initiatives”.

As the inaugural event, the Race will be held on August 29, 2015 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at Kew Gardens, a large park in The Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto, that stretches from Queen Street East to the lakeshore at Kew Beach .
It is hoped that the Organizers will get the support needed to move forward in making “The Amazing BPS Racing Cane Challenge Canada” an annual event.

This Event is not only to have the BPS participate in the Race, but also to engage and empower the BPS and the sighted communities to be part of the Event’s planning and ex*****on in the future.

Protocol: To work as a Team of two, consisting of one BPS and one Sighted Guide of his/her choice along with a personal sighted volunteer who will take photos, video and monitor the progress of the Team. There will be a maximum of seven (7) Teams.

Goal: To offer a fun challenge to the BPS to showcase their techniques of orientation and mobility, along with their physical, mental, emotional and tactile abilities.

Objective: To complete the four (4) interesting, functional and recreational challenges of the Race within the best of their abilities in the fastest time (best time) monitored for safe and practical ex*****on.
The first TEAM to complete the challenges and reach the finish point will be declared The Winner of the first “The Amazing BPS Racing Cane Challenge Canada”.

Meeting Area: TEAMS will be welcomed and greeted in front of the Leuty Boat House facing the lake at the foot of Lee Ave., south of Queen St. E.. This area will also be the Starting Point where the first clue will be given to commence the Race.

Finishing Point: It will be at the Kew Beach Lawn Bowling Club (KBLBC).
Food and drinks will be provided along with awards at the KBLBC.
