PART 2: Holistic hairstylist rates viral hair trends 👀💇♀️ .mararose
✨ Rice Water — 7/10
Rich in amino acids, antioxidants + inositol (a carbohydrate that may help protect and repair hair). Some studies suggest it can improve shine, reduce friction, and strengthen the hair shaft.
BUT… too much protein exposure can make some hair feel stiff, dry, or brittle over time. Great in moderation but not magic.
🧅 Onion Juice — 3/10
There’s limited research showing onion juice may help some cases of hair loss because sulfur supports keratin production and circulation.
The downside? It’s highly irritating for many scalps, smells intense, and can trigger inflammation or sensitivity ... especially if your scalp barrier is already compromised.
⚠️ Keratin Treatments — 2/10
Yes, they can temporarily make hair look smoother and shinier.
But many keratin treatments rely on harsh chemicals, high heat, and ingredients that can damage the hair structure long term. Some formulas may also release formaldehyde-related compounds when heated. Smooth doesn’t always equal healthy.
🥥 Coconut Oil — 2/10
Controversial one 👀
Coconut oil CAN reduce protein loss in hair because it penetrates the hair shaft well.
But for many people, especially with dry, sensitive, or low-porosity hair/scalps, it can feel heavy, create buildup, disrupt the scalp environment, and leave hair feeling even drier over time. It’s also not very compatible with the natural pH of healthy skin/scalp function.
💛 Jojoba Oil — 10/10
Jojoba isn’t technically an oil — it’s a wax ester, and it’s one of the closest things to our natural sebum.
That means it’s lightweight, scalp-friendly, less likely to clog pores, and helps support moisture balance without coating the hair excessively. Amazing for scalp health + softness.
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp and a healthy body 🫶
