I started practicing yoga in 1996, the original motivation — to touch my toes! I had no idea the journey I was beginning to undertake would be so profound and transformational. Almost 20 years later, I can touch my toes, and along the way I discovered that my talent and my passion has become helping others nourish their unique journey toward self discovery. While most of my retreats and offerings

are open to all, I am particularly passionate about helping women explore the divine feminine and embrace their indwelling power, the Shakti nature within. This work entails going deep, uncovering blocks, becoming embodied, balanced and strong on all levels, ultimately, becoming comfortable with feminine creativity, sexuality and personal power. As I continue the personal practice of embracing Shakti, I experience my evolution forward into myself. An increasingly empowering and liberating experience, I can’t help but feel compelled to help others (primarily women) experience this for themselves. I am the founding owner of Chinook Yoga in Prince George, BC and a Director within the Primary Faculty of the SOYA Yoga Teacher Training Program. I have more than 18 years of yoga teaching experience and have taught many practitioners to become yoga teachers themselves. I am also a Doctor of Homeopathy and I love to creatively integrate the principles of Yoga and Homeopathy to help unlock a student’s deepest potential within.

Goodness overload on the kitchen table today! 🌿

This is just a sample of what came out of the garden this weekend, and I’m feeling so grateful for this first big harvest of the season.

One of the foundational ways I practice feeling great in my body is by growing some of my own food. There’s truly no better feeling than bringing real, sun-grown food straight to the table.
What’s growing in your world right now? 👇

Earlier this week, after moving my daughter into her dorm, I took myself out on a celebration date for dinner.

I pre-booked a reservation at Olia based on a friend's recommendation, sat solo at the bar, chatted with the bartender, and treated myself to the sensational six-course fixed menu. The standout was a melt-in-your-mouth Mezzaluna with black truffle, ricotta, sweet grilled corn and Parmigiano butter.

But the most powerful part wasn't just the food. It was sitting by myself at that bar, fully present, soaking in the experience and letting the weight of the day settle. I left still feeling all the bittersweet emotions, but deeply happy that I had taken myself on a date.

We are so good at pulling out all the stops to celebrate everyone else. I think there are moments in our own lives that deserve that same kind of recognition. This was one of mine.

Deep, rich, gelatinous bone broth without leaving the stove on for 24 hours. 🥣✨
Homemade bone broth is incredible for supporting gut health, joint mobility, and deep cellular nourishment - and making it yourself is super easy and budget-friendly. Using the Instant Pot cuts the hands-on time drastically while extracting every bit of gelatin and mineral goodness from the bones.
Ingredients:
* Beef marrow/knuckle bones (roasted at 425°F/220°C until deeply browned)
* 1 onion, cut
* 1 head of garlic
* Fresh turmeric root
* Fresh rosemary sprigs
* Whole peppercorns & sea salt
* Splash of raw apple cider vinegar
Method:
1. Pressure cook on HIGH for 3 hours.
2. Strain the first batch into a large bowl.
3. The Yield Hack: Add fresh water back over the same bones and run a second 3-hour pressure cycle (remouillage).
4. Combine both batches for maximum volume and a perfectly set, gelled finish.
5. Pour into mason jars (leave 1–2 inches of head space at the top so the glass doesn't crack as it expands!) and freeze once completely cooled.
Do you make your broth on the stovetop or in the pressure cooker? Let me know below! 👇

Dropping my daughter off at University this week has made me think about how we mark transitions in women's lives. Society lavishes mothers with rites of passage at the beginning of the journey - pregnancy announcements, baby showers, blessingways, and birth celebrations. We explicitly honour the shift into motherhood.

But when a woman finishes the daily work of raising her children into thriving, independent adults, we hand her the word empty nest and send her on her way.

I have never liked that phrase. It makes two decades of building a human sound like a loss instead of an achievement.

I think we lack a sacred marker or cultural ritual that acknowledges both the deep grief of letting go and the monumental achievement of raising a thriving, independent human. It deserves recognition, space, and celebration for the woman who spent two decades building that foundation and is now shifting back into herself, sovereign and unclaimed by anyone else's needs for the first time in years.

If 'empty nest' feels too small for this moment, what would you call this transition instead? If you've launched your children into the world, what was that experience like for you?

Knowing a milestone is coming doesn’t make the weight of it any lighter.

My daughter is 19, and after a year of traveling, working, and stretching her wings, she’s heading off to University. She’s ready, and I knew this shift was approaching (having already done it once with her older brother), but I still felt the big feels of all of it last week.

Then I found this giant Sphinx moth caterpillar on the side of a forest road, right on the edge of its transformation into a pupa. 🐛

Nature has a way of dropping the exact mirror you need at the right moment. Here’s to stepping into a completely new chapter - for both of us. 🌿🦋 -nesting

I was walking Odin on the Pidherney trails the other day when we met up with a neighbour who walks his standard poodle, Remy. While we were chit-chatting, he suddenly looked down at my feet and exclaimed, “It’s YOU!”

He told me he’s been seeing mysterious barefoot footprints on the forest trails for years and couldn’t figure out who was walking out there without shoes. He seemed concerned that I would hurt myself. I just laughed because, as you probably know, forest walking barefoot is one of my absolute delights.

His reaction made me think about how much energy we waste trying to protect ourselves from worst-case scenarios. I don’t stare at the ground scanning for danger. I glance at the ground, stay present in my body, and trust my feet to know where to step.

I see this same hyper-vigilance in so many midlife women. We’re always braced, overthinking every step and watching for what might go wrong. I wish more women knew how much energy that takes, and what it can feel like to finally permit yourself to drop some of that armour.

Where in your life are you bracing for something that hasn’t even happened?

We are so insanely good at pushing through. Literally.

Tired? Keep going.
Stressed? Keep going.
Need a break? Finish one more thing first.

Sometimes your nervous system doesn’t need another protocol.

It needs you to lie down.

And yes, I’m aware that for some women, this may be an advanced practice. 😉

Thanks to three incredible raspberry patches on our property and diligent care, we’ve had a massive bumper crop this summer. Having all this fruit picked and frozen for the winter is an incredible gift of abundance, and I’m deeply grateful for it. BUT… after three weeks of picking almost every single night, I am officially over it.

The chickens like to hover under my feet hoping for dropped berries, which does make it more fun, but now that the nights are coming earlier, finding myself out in the garden picking at 9:00 PM in the twilight just feels like work. The joy from week one has worn off.

Here is the thing: we are allowed to be deeply grateful for the harvest and simultaneously completely over the harvest. High capacity without rest leads to depletion, even when it’s filled with things you love. It’s okay to say, "This is wonderful, and I'm done for tonight."

And leave the raspberries for the chickens.

Harvested fresh peppers, garlic, and onions from the garden and created my own Lion’s Mane Piri Piri! 🌶️🧠

Spicy, bright, and packed with cognitive support for focus and clarity. Here is my exact recipe to make at home. 👇

Carla’s Lion’s Mane Piri Piri

Ingredients:
* 2 red bell peppers, chopped
* 1–2 habaneros (1 seeded for mild/med; keep seeds for heat)
* 1 yellow onion, chopped
* 4–5 garlic cloves
* 3 tbsp EVOO (divided)
* ½ cup white vinegar
* 2 tbsp white wine vinegar
* 1 tbsp lime juice
* 1–2 tbsp lion’s mane powder
* 1 tsp sea salt (plus extra to taste)
* 1 tsp smoked paprika
* 2–3 tbsp warm water (as needed)

Instructions:
1. Sauté: Heat 1 tbsp EVOO. Sauté onion and garlic 3–4 mins. Add peppers; cook 5 mins until soft.
2. Simmer: Add vinegars and lime juice. Cover and simmer 8–10 mins until tender.
3. Season: Remove from heat; stir in salt, paprika, and lion’s mane.
4. Blend: Blend high until smooth. On low, drizzle in remaining 2 tbsp EVOO to emulsify.
5. Adjust: Add warm water for a pourable texture. Bottle and refrigerate.

P.S. A big shout-out to New Earth Organics for supplying the wildcrafted Lion’s Mane mushroom powder used in this recipe! Love supporting a great Canadian company dedicated to high-quality functional foods. 🇨🇦🍄

You know when your brain just feels discombobulated? I've been sitting at the computer, staring at the same sentence, reading it over and over, and just not getting anywhere with it.

The thing that resets me almost every time isn't more effort or pushing through. It's changing the scenery entirely. I get up, go outside, and within seconds something shifts.

Today it was my garden. I stood in front of my poppies, just enjoying them, and I could feel my whole state change.

Being outside can help regulate your nervous system, lower cortisol, and pull you out of that tight, over-focused headspace. And when your nervous system begins to settle, clarity often follows. You cannot force a clear mind from a body that's still activated.

So now, when I hit that wall at the computer, I don't sit there and grind through it. I go outside, because even five minutes can change something.

This is the kind of connection between your brain, body, and nervous system that we explore in "Where Did My Brain Go?" If brain fog has you staring at the same sentence, losing your train of thought, or wondering where your clarity went, you can learn more about the course here:
