Castor oil is a natural remedy for fungal nail infections (onychomycosis).
Ricinoleic Acid Content
The primary active component of castor oil is ricinoleic acid, which makes up about 90% of its composition. Research suggests this fatty acid possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Deep Pe*******on and Moisturization
Fungal nails often become brittle, thick, and prone to cracking. Castor oil is a highly viscous "humectant," meaning it draws moisture into the tissue. It softens the nail plate and the surrounding cuticle.
Creating a Protective Barrier By coating the nail and the hyponychium (the skin under the nail tip), castor oil creates a hydrophobic (water-repelling) barrier. Since fungi thrive in damp, dark environments, keeping the area sealed from external moisture can help manage the environment where the fungi spread.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects. Fungal infections often cause redness and swelling in the nail folds (paronychia). Ricinoleic acid has documented anti-inflammatory effects that can help soothe the irritation and discomfort associated with the infection.
Important Considerations:
• Not a Fast Fix: Fungi are notoriously difficult to treat because they live deep within the keratin of the nail. Even with medical treatments, it can take 6–12 months for a clear nail to grow out.
• Surface vs. Systemic: Castor oil works topically. If the fungus has reached the nail matrix (the root), topical oils alone rarely clear the infection completely.
• Debridement: For any topical treatment to work—natural or medical—the nail must have debridement so the treatment can actually reach the fungus underneath.
