For me, the best part of being a researcher is not just about time spent doing the science.

It is also about the opportunity to disseminate my research around the world, to peers and leaders in the field.

Here, at the International Myotonic Dystrophy Consortium (1DMC15) meeting in Canada, we have come together to talk about science, but also to clink glasses, make useful connections and enjoy a new culture.

Charles Darwin and the Signature in the Cell

Today is the birthday of Charles Darwin, the father of biology, according to many.

It is called the Darwin Day in scientific circles and is being celebrated all over the world.

Darwin's legacy is recognised by people of all faiths.

Still, Darwin is not popular in religious circles because his theories on evolution appear to be diametrically opposed to the accounts of sacred books (The Torah, The Bible and The Quran) on the origin of man.

These books say that God created man in his image and likeness, from a mud, and then breathed on it to give it life.

The idea that man, made in God's image, could have come from apes is uncomfortable for many religious people.

However, many Bible scholars argue that the stories of creationism in Genesis should not be taken literally as the ways of God are not ours, and that God could have carried out his creative work through natural processes, like evolution.

This has given birth to Theistic Evolution, a concept where Christian scientists believe that some of the theories on natural selection agree with the idea of a creator, who wrote the codes in the DNA (as humans would a computer program), the very letters of life, the alteration of which drives natural selection, which, in turn, drives evolution.

One of such scientists is Cambridge-educated Stephen Meyer, who wrote "Signature in the Cell", a book that argues for the existence of supernatural intelligence which is behind the universe and especially the creative forces of biology.

I bought this book seven years ago and recommend it for curious minds looking for an alternative argument to "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins.

The compelling argument for intelligent design - an idea that did not even originate from Meyer, but through the evidence provided by the digital codes of the DNA and the many sophisticated nanotechnologies and molecular machines in the cells - makes the argument for blind evolution old fashioned.

The book does not dispute the unimpeachable concept of evolution as a fine-tuning force put in nature by a 'Superintelligent Creator', nor does it argue against common ancestry, making it a non-religious book.

It rather looks at the science and the philosophies of the 'origins' questions, to provide a disinterested challenge against the non-involvement of intelligence in the 'history' of species.

Darwin's own epistemiological beliefs regarding God was more agnostic than atheistic.

Such agnostic leaning might have been influenced by a conflict in his scientific findings on the processes that could have led to man (which he must have found to be rather more tortuous and untidy) versus the magic or miracle of creationism as religious texts and teachers would have him believe.

It is my belief that if theists and atheists could resolve the dogma in their definition of the nature and expectations of God, perhaps they would have found the absolute utility of Darwin's theories and arguments on the Orgins of Species and the Descent of Man.

Happy posthumous birthday to Charles Darwin, the father of biology.

If you're running on low energy or depressed this winter

You may start by getting up and making your bed, cleaning your space or doing some housekeeping.

That way, you start getting good feelings and into the right mood.

You may also sit down at your desk and say you're going to start that waiting task.

Tell yourself you'll only give 5 minutes to it.

Trust me, you'll get into the right gear and have your energy and motivation boosted.

Try it.

Good news for care workers in the UK.

Pressure is mounting on the Home Secretary to discard the proposed 15 years wait before healthcare workers in the UK could be eligible for permanent residency.

Corbyn's letter is a powerful one.

I read a job decription where the employer asks the applicants to be wary of AI use in writing their essays for the job in other to preserve their own unique style of writing.

I agreed with this

However, I have sat back to think that this might be a disadvantage to good writers, who are already at a high level of communication and can use complex style which may look like something out of an AI tool.

This, I think, is one of the downsides of AI for writing.

We may find it difficult to judge good writers solely on the merit of their talent.

And using the instance of job applications, they may consciously lower their writing standards to escape a label that may not apply to them.

In an AI-driven world, it is tempting to submit your CV to CHATGPT or other AI tools and ask it to write a personal statement for you, for a job or study application.

Don't do this, especially for job application; your application may not be progressed to the interview stage.

These days, the HR for skilled opportunities can spot a statement written by AI in two ways:

1. AI-generated statement, even though it makes use of the information you have submitted, will produce more generic statement, with a language style that is easy to detect.

2. The statement written by AI lacks originality and voice.

Your potential employers want to hear your own voice and this is easily detectable in your style of writing - to tell about your experiences in a unique tone that enables you scale the first line of application assessment.

While AI continues to be relevant and should be deployed to facilitate more complex tasks, your original style when it comes to job or grant applications, can stand you out.

Give time to completing the application so that you are not under pressure to outsource it to AI last minutes.

It may backfire.

All the best!
