🐴 A horse cannot breathe through its mouth — not even in an emergency, not even under severe exertion.

This is one of the most significant anatomical facts about horses, and one of the least understood by people outside equine medicine.

Horses are obligate nasal breathers. Their soft palate — the tissue at the back of the mouth — forms a continuous seal against the base of the tongue, effectively locking the oral passage. The airway runs from nostrils directly to the larynx, bypassing the mouth entirely. Unlike humans, who can switch to mouth breathing when the nose is compromised, a horse has no such alternative pathway.

This means that when a horse is in respiratory distress — whether from an obstruction, a collapsed airway, or severe exertion — it cannot open its mouth and breathe through it. That instinct, so automatic in humans, is simply not available to them.

It is why horses that choke on food — a condition called choke in equine medicine, which refers to esophageal obstruction rather than airway obstruction — still breathe normally, since the esophagus and airway are separate. But any obstruction or collapse in the nasal or laryngeal pathway is immediately life-threatening.

It also explains why horses can eat and breathe simultaneously while grazing — the palate seal allows respiration to continue while the mouth is occupied.

The equine eye measures approximately 50 millimeters in diameter, making it the largest eye of any land mammal on Earth. For context: a human eyeball averages around 24 millimeters. A horse's eye is more than twice the size. It is, in fact, closer in diameter to the eye of a great whale than to ours.

Those large eyes are positioned on the sides of the skull rather than the front, which grants horses a nearly 360-degree field of vision. They can see almost everything around them simultaneously — the grass in front, the tree to the left, the movement behind — without turning their heads. This panoramic awareness evolved precisely because they needed to detect predators from any direction at any moment.

There are two small blind spots: one directly behind the horse (immediately beyond the tail) and one directly in front of the nose, in a narrow cone. This is why horses sometimes startle at objects that suddenly appear in their front blind spot — the object seems to materialize out of nothing.

Their night vision also far exceeds ours. The tapetum lucidum — a reflective layer behind the retina — amplifies available light, allowing horses to see clearly at dusk and into the dark.
