This spring we’ve been putting our minds to work with some edible science experiments in the SaskAbilities day program.

Last week, we made this magical slime (from Jell-o, cornstarch and water) that forms a solid when compacted and returns to its gooey form when it sits.

So cool to see these experiments in action!

It took a while to arrive, but spring has finally sprung and SaskAbilities residents in Moose Jaw are taking full advantage of the nicer days.

We’ve been out walking Stormi the dog, checking out garden centres and the Regina Floral Conservatory, enjoying Moose Jaw’s many parks and even checked out a couple horse shows! Lots more on tap this summer in Moose Jaw too!

There are some partnerships that go far beyond sponsorships - they become part of the heart of Camp Easter Seal.

Year after year, the incredible teams from Century 21 Dome Realty Inc. and CENTURY 21 Fusion show up with work gloves, big hearts, and unstoppable energy to help get camp ready for the summer season.

Every year, these amazing teams dedicate their time, energy, and hearts to helping us get camp ready for the children, youth, and adults experiencing disability who will soon be arriving to make unforgettable memories.

This wasn’t just a quick cleanup day.
They rolled up their sleeves and tackled everything from clearing out last year’s flower beds to prepare for beautiful new blooms, blowing leaves off pathways and camper play areas, moving portable air conditioners into the units, organizing and putting away incoming supplies, cleaning the kitchen, stocking freezers, and even assembling brand-new canopy structures for camp.

What may look like a cleanup day to some is so much more to us. It’s community. It’s compassion in action. It’s people choosing to make a difference where it matters most.

To every single volunteer who gave their time, energy, and heart, thank you will never feel big enough. Your kindness leaves a lasting impact on our camp, our organization, and every camper who gets to create life-changing memories here each summer.

Century 21 Dome and Century 21 Fusion you continue to show us what community leadership truly looks like, and we are beyond grateful to have you standing beside us year after year. 💛

“This work has always been more than just a job for me.”

It’s Disability Service Professionals Week and we’re celebrating some of the individuals (and families) at SaskAbilities helping create more inclusive communities for everyone.

Imelda never thought she would work alongside any of her children. These days, though, she counts two of them among her colleagues in the SaskAbilities Quality of Life program.

“I wanted them to experience what it means to be a support worker for people experiencing disability because this work has always been more than just a job for me – it is my vocation, my calling.”

Imelda discovered that calling while caring for her grandparents back home in the Philippines and carried that over to Canada when she helped launch the Quality of Life program in 2014.

She couldn’t have known then that 11 years later her son Reynaldo would start working with the SLYP-Out and Summer Fun youth programs. Or that a few months later, her daughter Izle would become a support worker at the day program just like her.

Imelda admits she wasn’t sure if support work was right for her kids, but then she heard glowing reviews from co-workers.

“I was so glad after that. I was like, ‘This is the job I want for my son’ because he’s so good at it. And the same for Izle, I’m so happy that she’s relating to participants right away … you don’t need to teach her what to do.”

While Imelda encouraged Reynaldo to apply, Izle, who earned her psychology degree in university, went a different route. She didn’t even tell her mom she’d applied until the day before her interview.

“I didn’t want anyone to know I was her child,” Izle says laughing.

But Izle had long thought about working with people experiencing disability and the past six months on the job have given her a new appreciation for all her mom has done in her career.

“I love being able to hang out with the participants every day,” says Izle. “When I was a teenager, I always saw my mom with different participants every day and it made me really curious. I was super proud of her because supporting people is hard.”
