She's spent her life showing up for others — foster kids, families in crisis, people who had no one else. Then Barb received a stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis. Suddenly, she was the one who needed care.

But she didn't have to face it alone. Mackenzie Health surgeon, Dr. Luke Bui, walked her through everything. The team around her made sure of it.

"I never once felt like I was going through this alone,” she said.

Today, Barb is well into her recovery and already thinking about how she can give back again. Because that's just who she is.

Double the birthdays, double the celebration! 🎂🎂

Twins Mark and Scarlett were the very first babies born at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital on June 6, 2021 — the same day the doors opened and became a full-service community hospital.
As the twins have grown, so has our hospital and the community we serve, and we’re grateful to everyone who has helped and continue to help make moments like these possible. 💙

Happy fifth birthday Mark, Scarlett and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital!

100 years young and still sharing a beautiful smile. 💜

Ratna, a very special Mackenzie Health patient, celebrated her 100th birthday on May 8, an incredible milestone filled with love, reflection and warm wishes from around the world.

Since moving to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2009, Ratna has trusted Mackenzie Health for care and support to continue living with joy and strength.

So, what’s her secret to a long and happy life? Staying positive and staying “playful,” she says, no matter what challenges come your way.

She also credits her family’s love and her deep Buddhist faith for helping her to keep going.

Her family says Ratna’s quiet strength and resilience continue to inspire everyone around her. And it may run in the family – Ratna's grandmother lived to be 104.

Please join us in wishing Ratna a very happy 100th birthday! 🎉

Tick season is here and with it comes a higher risk of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. To help you stay safe outdoors, we asked Dr. Sull, Chief and Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at Mackenzie Health, to highlight five key ways to protect yourself before and after a tick bite:

1. Cover up: Long sleeves, pants and tucked-in socks help keep ticks off your skin.
2. Use repellent: Apply DEET or icaridin on skin
3. Check often: Inspect your body and shower within two hours of coming indoors.
4. Remove ticks properly: Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick tool — pull straight out, don’t twist.
5. Know when to seek care: Look for a bullseye rash, flu-like symptoms or trouble removing a tick.

Spring cleaning isn’t just for closets — your medicine cabinet needs a refresh too. Karim, Pharmacy Manager at Purehealth Pharmacy, Mackenzie Health’s retail pharmacy partner, says a quick cleanup can boost safety and cut the clutter.

✨ Check expiration dates: expired meds may not work or may be unsafe
✨ Remove duplicates and unused meds: they increase the risk of accidental ingestion
✨ Keep only essentials: eye and ear drops usually expire one month after opening
✨ Dispose properly: don’t flush meds or toss loose pills in the trash
✨ Seal and return: bag expired or unused meds and bring them to a pharmacy for safe disposal

A tidy cabinet sets the tone for a healthier season. Fresh air, fresh habits, fresh start.

🔥Summer BBQ season should be fun. Trips to the emergency department? Not fun.

So, we asked Dr. Taher, Emergency Medicine Physician, for some advice on how to keep safety at the top of the menu and avoid preventable injuries.

“Most grill injuries happen in seconds. A quick safety check before you start can prevent a trip to the ER,” says Dr. Taher.

His top tips:

• Keep your grill stable: place it on a flat, open surface away from structures.
• Stay attentive: never leave a lit grill unsupervised.
• Use long‑handled tools: they help keep hands and arms away from heat.
• Check for flare‑ups: keep a spray bottle of water nearby for small flames.

Enjoy the sunshine, the food and a safe grilling season.

Meet Susan, a registered nurse in our Critical Care Unit who also helps teach and support the next generation of nurses.

She started her career caring for patients with long‑term health needs before moving into the fast‑paced world of critical care — a place where she was excited to learn, grow and take on new challenges.

“What stands out most to me is the inspiration and empowerment — the learning and teaching opportunities available to staff,” says Susan.

Today, Susan not only provides exceptional care but also mentors students and leads important safety and patient‑care initiatives. She works hard to create a supportive, respectful environment where her colleagues feel confident and valued.

Inspired by the nurses who supported her as a student, she’s now committed to helping future nurses grow, thrive and make a meaningful difference for patients and families.
