A little reminder while many of us are hiding from this heat…

A few missed rides will not make or break your horse’s career.

I think we sometimes panic when life, weather, illness, or circumstances interrupt our training plans. We start worrying that we’re falling behind or losing our hard work.

In reality, good training is measured over months and years, not days.

If it’s dangerously hot, your horse is tired, or conditions simply aren’t appropriate, giving them a day (or days) off is not a failure.

It’s good management.

The horses don’t know what day is circled on the calendar. They don’t know what your riding schedule was supposed to be this week.

They only know how they feel today.

Sometimes the best training decision we can make isn’t to push through, but to be patient enough to wait for a better day.

Because careers are built by thousands of good decisions, not by never missing a ride. 💙

For the best cooling effect: Hose → Scrape → Repeat

Water is one of the most effective ways to cool a horse down! It pulls heat away from the horse’s body quickly, especially when fresh, cool water is continually applied and scraped off until their body temperature has returned to normal.

Tip: once the horse is cool, put that scraper away and let the final round drip dry

X MYTH: Water left on your horse makes them hotter.

FACT: Water helps keep them cool longer!

Why humidity matters

Humidity often makes moderate temperatures more dangerous than hotter, dry temperatures.

Horses cool themselves by sweating. When the humidity is low sweat evaporates, removing heat from the body.

When the humidity is high, sweat stays on the skin instead of evaporating, making cooling much less effective. This means a horse can overheat, even if the air temperature isn’t high.

Ex: 25 degrees with 80% humidity is more dangerous than 35 degrees with 40% humidity

I’m not sure anyone loves playing with the hose as much as this guy!

How are you helping your horses beat the heat this week? 🥵

Why safe practice is so important, and understanding the anatomical structures you’re working on! Being able to read your horse’s body language is key to safely using any tool (including your hands)

I often see people using these devices along the neck, spine and over the ribs. There is not enough “meat” on these surfaces for safe use. There is only a very small area on the horse suitable for a massage gun.

Is your horse enjoying it or are they internally bracing against it? These often look very similar.

Using a massage gun on your face can cause permanent blindness, according to a shocking new medical report out of a major downtown clinic. A local student in his 20s suffered multiple retinal tears, bruising, and rare retinal dialysis after using a percussive massage gun on and around his eyes for several minutes a week to relieve tiredness. The high-frequency vibrations from the commercial device effectively mimicked severe physical trauma, causing the retina to detach from its base.

Surgeons had to perform emergency laser therapy and barrier laser treatments to stabilize the man's eye and save his sight. While the patient's vision was preserved after six months of recovery, ophthalmologists are issuing an urgent warning to Canadians about the dangers of these wellness tools. Doctors are now demanding that manufacturers place prominent warnings on devices to keep them far away from the face.

As an equine bodyworker, I can help support comfort, mobility and function, but lasting change often comes from looking at the bigger picture!

When I’m assessing a horse, I’m not just looking at muscles and movement. I’m also curious about the life the horse lives between appointments - and the other 23 hours a day when they’re not working.

Sometimes the easiest way to get beyond barriers in creating conditions that allow the body to do what it was designed to do 🫶

What management changes have made the biggest difference for your horse? What were the changes you saw in your horse?

👌 ensuring the horse understands and is willing to do what we’re asking - that’s leadership.

Achieving this requires a comfortable body and mind, built with proper training and bodywork.

Making the experience comfortable for everyone reduces stress all around.

No one enjoys doing groceries lugging around a screaming toddler (this isn’t about shopping)

Friday’s Food for Thought

Is your horse having a bad day… or are you?

Horses are incredibly sensitive to our energy. They don’t just respond to trained cues, they often reflect our emotions, tension, and mindset.

Before assuming your horse is being difficult, distracted, or unwilling, take a moment to check in with YOU.

Are you feeling stressed?
Frustrated?
Rushed?
Distracted?

Sometimes the biggest change we can make in our horse starts with us 🫶

What is your horse reflecting back to you today?
