Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm

Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm The community of Roddickton-Bide Arm is known for its rich history and hospitality. Its culture is rooted in logging and fishing.

Located on the eastern side of the Great Northern Peninsula, the communities of Roddickton and Bide Arm amalgamated on January 1, 2009 to create the Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm. Bringing together two different economic industries: the fishery and forestry. Roddickton-Bide Arm is known as the "Moose Capital of the World" with a moose population of six animals per square kilometer. It is not uncomm

on to see moose on lawns, in back yards, or along the streets at any time of day or night. In addition to the moose, this area is also home to a healthy population of caribou and black bears. The Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm maintains the Green Moose Interpretation Centre, which provides a look at the natural heritage and resources in the region. The centre provides a focal point for tourist attractions on the Canada Bay side of the Great Northern Peninsula; it highlights the area's unique culture, natural heritage and wildlife in the region. The motto "Safe Haven of the North" derived from the Winter Tilting days of the late 1800's and early to mid 1900's when residents of surrounding communities moved to Bide Arm to work during the winter months and also to escape the bitter cold of Newfoundland winters on the Great Northern Peninsula. Many of them referred to Bides Arm (as the old folk say) as their Safe Haven. This motto has proven true even today. When winds are high during summer months boat owners from surrounding communities have docked their vessels in Bide Arm's sheltered harbour where it is safe from potential damage.
