What do I do? Within BC’s regulatory scope here’s a quick refresh on my approach to practice:

✨Musculoskeletal Ax: assessing and diagnosing movement, strength, mobility, function and msk injuries.

✨Exercise Prescription & Rehabilitation: developing individualized programs to improve strength, mobility, stability, rehab injury and optimize load.

✨Sports Injury Management: assessing and managing muscle, tendon, ligament and joint injuries. Not just the spine!

✨Movement & Gait Analysis: evaluating running biomechanics, movement patterns and functional limitations.

✨Education: I want to help you understand your injury, manage training loads and get back to doing what you love.

✨Hands on treatment when appropriate: the use of manual therapy (yes, that can include joint manips) as a tool within a broader treatment plan.

✨My focus is NOT alignment: your spine and hips aren’t “out”. But certain muscular imbalances and compensation patterns may make it feel like they are, and an adjustment won’t fix you. Let’s step away from an antiquated model of care and understand what’s really going on!

NSAIDs are widely used in marathon and ultrarunning, with most runners taking them prophylactically to combat muscular pain during training and racing. But the risk may not be worth it.

A 2024 review looked at the health effects of NSAID use and endurance/ultra-endurance running. Here are my take aways:

💊: NSAIDS are widely used by runners, but the evidence on health risks is still limited. They do not enhance performance.

💊: acute kidney injury (AKI) is the biggest concern. We know ultrarunning alone carries a higher risk of kidney injury, and several studies suggest a link between NSAID use and AKI. The perfect storm could be achieved based on hydration status, heat stress and NSAID dose. The risk here is not worth the trade-off.

💊: NSAIDs may blunt collagen synthesis after prolonged exercise. This can slow your body’s tissue adaptation and recovery.

💊: some studies found low sodium or more hyponatremia with NSAID use. Again, paying attention to individual electrolyte and hydration status will influence this.

💊: the studies included in the review had a small sample size and NSAID type (ibu vs. naproxen vs. diclofenac) and dosage was not consistent across studies.

💊: individual metabolism and health status matters. Do you have a history of kidney injury, cardiac issues, struggle with electrolytes, or have difficulty managing heat stress while running? These factors all influence your risk.

So what do you do? In training, NSAID use is not recommended due to the high risk. If you need to take something to get through your run pain-free, we have bigger issues at stake that may require re-evaluating your training program and investigating why you have pain.
Prophylactic use during races is discouraged due to AKI. However, if needed to manage pain during a race, use the lowest effective dose, stay well hydrated, and stay on top of electrolytes and managing heat stress.

Run smarter this fall.

Fall is one of the best times to hit the trails in the Kootenays, and a great time to take a closer look at how you run.

Gait Analysis is a 1:1 session using video analysis to identify opportunities to improve running efficiency and decrease injury risk.

It’s not about changing your form, it’s about working with the movement you already have! Customized strength and mobility plans are created based on your biomechanics (and fall/winter is the best time to load up on strength for runners!)

Book your session at Infinity Physio Centre and head into the fall trail season feeling strong.

little refresh coming atcha!
Why the switch? The word “spine” is almost synonymous with the chiropractic profession, and I’m tired of it. Chiropractors can assess, diagnose and treat ALL areas of the body, not just your back and necks. What’s even cooler? We can focus our practice on injury prevention, home care exercises and strength training! That’s what I preach in my practice, so it’s about time I made the change to my branding. Stay tuned for more updates rolling out soon.
Huge thanks to Emilie-Soleil Patterson for the logo refresh.
