Ghost Pipe ๐ป (Monotropa uniflora)
The majestic, non-photosynthesizing perennial flowering plant! It's a parasitic herbaceous plant that is able to sustain life by drawing nutrients from mycorrhizal fungi and their underground networks. The host fungi, in turn, have a symbiotic relationship with tree rootsโso Ghost Pipe is often found hidden in dense, damp forests, beneath or poking out from the floor litter. ๐ฒ๐
๐ฟ Medicinal Aspects
In herbalism, it is known as a nervine. It is said to create an emotional distance from pain. It's often prepared as a tincture, which turns a marvelous purple colour! ๐ฎ Because it is extremely potent, it must be used cautiously and sparingly.
It reportedly has a beneficial impact on the nervous system by enhancing relaxation that helps with:
Insomnia & panic
Substance withdrawal
Easing depression, grief, trauma, and anxiety
The biochemical properties of Ghost Pipe are still being studied and research is still in its infancy, making it largely a scientific mystery. We do know that it contains Salicylic Acid compounds which can quiet overactive pain receptors.
โจ Energetically, itโs known as a bridge between worlds.
๐ Look, Don't Touch!
It's a rare find and considered exploitably vulnerable in some natural habitats. It is also highly touch-sensitive and bruises easily. It will oxidize and melt into a black, sludgy slime if handled, so please consider appreciating it by practicing admiration with your eyeballs instead of harvesting! ๐ซ๐
It's a delicate plant, so if you must work with it, it's best to prepare ahead and place it straight into your jarred menstruum right on the forest floor.
๐ Once small forest bees pollinate the downturned "pipe" flowers, the entire stem flips completely upright to face the sky, drying out into a brittle woody stick.
They come to life when the right conditions exist and they thrive on moisture, so you may see them around right now due to our favourably wet spring. So Keep your eyes peeled on your next woods walk. ๐ง๏ธ๐ฟ
