Ever heard that it ”takes a village….”

Historically, women have been supported throughout their lives with the community around them, other women, aunties, mothers, friends, etc. To help them through things such as pregnancy, the postpartum period and raising their children. The support from this community helped these women and families grow.

In our modern society unfortunately we have lost most of this. As women, we are expected to figure out our bodies and cycles, deal with fertility, pregnancy and post partum, mostly on our own. Depending on your own situation, you may not have family or friends around or feel that it is a sign of weakness to ask for help.

This is where the doula comes in! Doulas provide emotional, physical, information and practical support. They can be part of your community through trying to conceive, pregnancy and for those first weeks home with your new baby.

I am so happy and grateful to be beginning my journey into supporting women and families through their pregnancies and into postpartum! To be able to become apart of someone’s community is so special to me!

Make sure to check out my new doula services! Follow www.christinetether.com/doula-services or send me a message!

I offer free 1 hour consults to make sure we are the right fit! If you are not local to the Shuswap, Kamloops or Vernon, I do also offer custom virtual services.

Firew**d (Epilobium angustifolium)

Firew**d is a beautiful plant that is used as a food as well as a medicine!

In the spring you can harvest the new shoots and cook them up sort of like asparagus. Later in the summer, you can use the flowers and leaves.

Medicinally, firew**d is anti inflammatory, anti fungal and soothing to our bodies. It has been used to help with imbalances in the gut including IBS. Our hormone health is directly related to how our guts are doing so it is incredibly helpful to have a herb like this on our side! Firew**d has also been shown to help with skin issues such as acne.

Burdock (Arctium lappa)

Have you ever been on a walk and found little pokey clingy burrs attached to your shoes, clothing or dog’s hair?

Those burrs are the seeds of the Burdock plant. While Burdock in invasive here in BC, it is a very useful medicinal plant. All parts of the plant can be used, both as food as well as medicine. Young leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. Roots can be cooked just like parsnips.

Burdock leaves can be used for acne, burns, bruises, fevers and relief from poison oak or poison ivy. The roots can be used for acne, eczema, hair loss, jaundice, ulcers and more!

Burdock is a natural health product in Canada to induce sweating, as a diuretic, to remove waste products and to remove pain associated with rheumatism.

It can be used as an extract, infusion, capsule, decoction, and tincture.

The flower essence helps promote spiritual awareness and improves intuition.

If you are planning to harvest burdock root, the best time is during the late summer/fall of its first year. It is a biennial plant, meaning that during the second year, stem leaves and flowers emerge.

Chicory (Cichorium intybus) 🌱

Right about now you might be noticing the streets (and maybe your yard) lined with purple flowers. Those are the flowers of the chicory plant! In BC, chicory is an invasive species and it grows like stink!

It also has so many medicinal properties! Traditionally, chicory was used to treat wounds and for many digestive complaints. It can help regulate blood sugar and aids in good gut health!

Roasted chicory root can even be used as a coffee substitute!

Want to give chicory “coffee” a try?

Plantain (Plantago major)

You will probably notice plantain in your yard, around roads and sidewalks and most places there has bene disturbance. It is an incredibly useful plant!

It is an anti inflammatory, mild antimicrobial, analgesic, diuretic and more! You can use it with wounds, mild infections, skin irritations, hemorrhoids, diaper rashes and insect bites.

The most common use my family uses plantain for is for insect bites. If anyone gets stung or bitten, my oldest daughter knows how to identify and collect some plantain. You can chew it up making a spit poultice and apply it to your bite!

My next plan is to add some plantain infused oil to add to a homemade diaper rash cream

Have you noticed this little plant around?
