Pitka Nutrition Hello, my name is Deanna. My son, Jaron and I have decided to team up to start a brand of health food products.

Through my 12 year battle with various cancers, I've turned into a little bit of a health crazy person, and my purpose is to share my recipes.

I was talking to Mom* today while she was getting an IV — vitamin C and mistletoe, overseen by her care team.

I asked her why she does some of the things she does.

Her answer wasn’t dramatic.
It wasn’t mystical.
And it definitely wasn’t about cures.

She explained that she’s been methodically sculpting her health for years.
Not reacting.
Not outsourcing responsibility.
Staying engaged.

She made a few thoughtful claims — but none of them are things we need to repeat on Pitka Nutrition.

What is worth sharing is how she thinks.

She’s very clear that the evidence around vitamin C and mistletoe is mixed — some early, some observational, often discussed in integrative settings around quality of life. She understands what science proves, what it doesn’t, and where the gaps still are.

Her approach isn’t simple — it’s calculated.
She’s too intelligent for me to try to summarize the full strategy, but it’s one she’s refined over years — navigating one of the most difficult situations a person can face, and continuing to show up with clarity, discipline, and resolve.

Her intention and agency — something to be admired and emulated

I was talking to Mom* today and she was rebounding (those little trampoline things).

I’ve seen her do it a hundred times, but I’ve never actually stopped to ask why.
So I asked.

She immediately switched into lecture mode, explaining it to me like I should already know this.

She explained that the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the heart — it relies on movement and changes in pressure to function. Gentle motion. Repetition. No impact. No stress.

Then she said:

“This isn’t about burning calories.
It’s about keeping things moving.”

“People think health has to be extreme to work. Most of the time, it just has to be consistent.”

That’s when I stopped talking and just let the lecture happen.

That’s how she approaches movement now — quietly, intentionally, and sustainably.

This morning I asked Mom* what she was doing today.

She said she was finishing her Chi ghung.
(I have no idea what that is.)

Then she makes herself eggs with avocado and walnuts.

At this point I think I’m just getting a normal answer.

Instead, she calmly launches into a full breakdown of why eggs are so important for the human body —
vitamins A, D, E, and K already packaged with fat so your body can absorb them,
antioxidants in the yolk like lutein and zeaxanthin for brain and eye health,
and why cholesterol isn’t the villain people were taught, but something your brain and hormones actually use.

I’m standing there thinking,
I asked how your day was going.

Then she explains why she pairs eggs with avocado —
stable energy, better absorption.

And walnuts —
omega-3s for the nervous system.

Chef brain kicks in because this already tastes great in my head.

I suggest goat cheese.
She refuses.

I suggest pine nuts — buttery, beautiful, perfect. 🤩
She refuses again.

Not because they wouldn’t taste incredible.
But because she eats for her health, not the moment.

Meanwhile I’m just trying to make breakfast and accidentally got a masterclass.

I cook for flavour.
She eats for function.

Pine Nut — the pretentious nut.

When I was asking Mom for her recipe, for Resilient Immunity, many moons ago, I gave a little pushback.

Why are we using the most expensive nut on God’s green earth? 🌍
Surely there’s a cheaper option that does the same thing… right?

Wrong.

Resilient Immunity is the porridge Mom built — shaped by her own fight, her discipline, and the standards she lives by.

Mom doesn’t build recipes around trends, taste alone, or what’s convenient. She’s firm on the science behind everything she does. When I questioned the pine nuts, she didn’t flinch — she just started explaining why they were there. Not loudly. Not defensively. Just confidently, the way she does when she knows she’s right.

Pine nuts are small, but they’re dense — loaded with key micronutrients, healthy fats, and compounds that support real, boring, unsexy things like cellular function, energy metabolism, and nutrient absorption. They’re not there to impress anyone. They’re there because they work.

I didn’t even realize how intentional that choice was until she broke it down.
Turns out the “pretentious nut” earns its place.

As usual, Mom knew exactly what she was doing

Mom is still in a quiet battle.
She’s a warrior — not the kind who broadcasts her trials, and not the kind who turns hardship into performance. She moves through it privately, unless sharing becomes necessary for the people she loves.

I can see it sometimes — a subtle, painful weight carried behind a bright smile.
But her focus is never on herself.

I hear motivational speakers talking about discipline, resilience, and “doing the work no matter how you feel.”

Mom doesn’t lecture about strength — even though she could.
And if she did, it would carry more weight than anything I’ve ever heard.

Because she lives it quietly.
In the choices no one sees.
In consistency instead of speeches.
In showing up without asking for credit.

That mindset — calm, disciplined, and grounded — is the foundation of everything we believe in.
Not trends.
Not shortcuts.
Just doing the work, day after day, with intention.

That’s the force behind her.
And it’s the standard we hold ourselves

Some foods don’t just feed you — they speak to you.

I asked Mom today:
if you only had a handful of foods to live off for the rest of your life, what would they be?

She didn’t hesitate.
Salmon.

She normally sticks to Alaskan wild-caught, but today she adapted to what was available.

Then she went into about couple minutes of nerdy details that completely lost me — so I stopped her.

“Mom. Explain it to me like a normal human.”

“Salmon = omega-3 fat, right, Jaron?”
Right.

“But when you eat salmon, your body breaks the protein down into really tiny pieces.

Those tiny pieces are called peptides.

And some of them seem to talk to your body — like little messengers.

They can interact with blood vessels, help muscles recover, and influence how the body handles physical stress.

So salmon isn’t just fuel.
It’s more like information.”

Not curing anything.
Not magic.
Just food doing more than we usually think it does.

Thanks for explaining it to me like a child…

Quick update

We expected our Amazon launch over a week ago.

It’s been sitting in a container in Toronto since December 21 — holidays, logistics, and a bit of hurry-up-and-wait. 👎

Not the exciting part of building a food brand, but it’s part of doing it properly.

Quiet doesn’t mean stopped.

We’re in the final stretch — only a few days away.
No official launch date for Resilient Immunity yet. I won’t make promises until logistics are locked in. Precision beats excitement every time.

Less than a few weeks out from launch — so close.

Here’s a quick recap of what’s inside Resilient Immunity, and why each ingredient is there.

This isn’t a diet trend that disappears in six months.
It’s not a cleanse, a reset, or a “protocol.”

It’s everyday food — all organic, non-GMO, whole ingredients — built to make sense long-term.

This is how my mom eats.
This is how we built Pitka Nutrition

As soon as Mom calls, I know it’s go time — I’m immediately scrambling to find a pen and paper.

Today it was pomegranates.

Polyphenols.

Antioxidant capacity.

Nutrition research.

Traditional diets.

Oxidative stress — the normal wear and tear of modern life. I’m half listening, a little dazed from life in general, realizing (again) that I should probably keep a notebook just for these calls.

She explains that pomegranate is one of the most polyphenol-dense fruits we know of — which is why it shows up so often in research and long-standing food traditions.

Not hype.

Not trends.

Just chemistry doing what it does.

Then, right at the end of the rant, she goes: “So really… pomegranates are kind of an antidote.”

I stopped her there.

Not an antidote to anything specific.

Not a medicine.

Not a claim.

I told her to keep going.

So she did.

She starts explaining — slowly, patiently — that polyphenols are studied for their role in redox balance. How they interact with reactive oxygen species. How they don’t eliminate oxidative processes, but help the body regulate them — the same processes that naturally come from metabolism, stress, and environmental exposure.

I’m writing as fast as I can at this point.

I stop her twice to ask:

“Is that oxidative or oxidization?”

“Is redox one word or two?”

“Wait — does that sentence even make sense?”

She sighs.

Corrects me.

Keeps going.

She explains that antioxidant capacity isn’t about canceling damage or avoiding life — it’s about supporting the body’s own regulatory systems so they can do what they’re already designed to do.

Basically: not protection from life — just better handling of it.

I finally ask her,

“Mom… why don’t you just post this?”

She says,

“I don’t know how to make posts on Facebook.”

Which is wildly ironic — because the most brilliant woman I know can casually explain polyphenols, redox balance, and antioxidant capacity from memory…

but can’t figure out how to make a Facebook post.

I look down at my notes.

They’re messy.

Half underlined.

Some words spelled wrong.

Arrows everywhere.

I tell her, “I’m definitely going to mess this up when I write it.”

She laughs and says,

“That’s okay — just don’t exaggerate it.”

So yeah.

Next time Mom calls, I’ll have a pen and paper ready —

because the science is hers
