🌿 Looking for a simple place to start reducing the chemicals in your home? Start with your laundry room.
One easy swap is replacing traditional dryer sheets with wool dryer balls.
Dryer sheets are typically made from a non-woven polyester or cellulose base coated with softening agents, lubricants, and fragrance compounds that transfer onto your clothing as the sheet heats up in the dryer.
Many conventional dryer sheets may contain quaternary ammonium compounds (“quats”), other fabric-softening ingredients, and synthetic fragrance mixtures. For some people, fragrances and other ingredients can contribute to skin or respiratory irritation, headaches, or sensitivity.
There are environmental considerations too. Scented laundry products can contribute fragrance chemicals and other compounds to indoor and outdoor air, while residues left behind on fabrics can affect things like towel absorbency and dryer-filter performance.
✨ A simple alternative? Wool dryer balls.
They can help reduce static, separate clothing as it tumbles, and may help shorten drying time. They’re also reusable, making them a simple way to reduce waste from single-use dryer sheets.
If you enjoy scented laundry, you can add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the dryer balls before they go into the dryer.
đź’ˇ My favourite little trick: I keep my wool dryer balls in a canister with my empty essential-oil bottles. The balls gradually pick up the remaining aroma from the bottles, helping me enjoy those very last drops instead of letting them go to waste.
Small changes can add up. 🌱
