Same weight, different body? You’re not imagining it.

On Friday I spent the day (way too early, with a coffee and a notebook) at McMaster University’s Women’s Health Review on perimenopause and menopause.

One thing that stuck with me: as estrogen shifts in perimenopause, your body starts storing more fat around your middle, even if the number on the scale hasn’t moved.

So if your jeans are fitting differently and you haven’t changed a thing, it’s not something you did wrong. Your body is changing, and it needs different support than it used to.

My other big takeaway: there’s no one symptom of perimenopause. Every woman’s experience is her own. That’s exactly why I don’t believe in cookie-cutter plans.

Have you noticed this change in your own body? Tell me below. 👇

Tired all day, wired all night. Anyone else? 🙃

Cortisol gets a bad rap, but you need it. It’s supposed to rise in the morning to wake you up and drop at night so you can sleep.

When you’re carrying a lot (work, kids, aging parents, a body that’s changing), that rhythm can get flipped. Cortisol also raises blood sugar, so stress and cravings are often connected too.

The goal isn’t to get rid of stress. It’s to give your body more support while you’re carrying it: regular meals, a wind-down routine, and permission to rest without earning it.

What does your evening wind-down actually look like? Be honest. Mine is sometimes scrolling. 😅

Raise your hand if 3 p.m. hits you like a truck. 🙋🏻‍♀️

For years I thought the afternoon crash and the nightly pantry tour meant I needed more discipline. What I actually needed was breakfast. 😅

In midlife, shifting estrogen can change how well your body handles blood sugar. So the same habits you’ve always had can suddenly leave you tired, hungry and craving sugar.

You aren’t broken, you just weren’t taught this information. Your body is giving you clues.

What time does your energy usually crash? Tell me below.

Nobody warned me that one glass of w**e in my 40s would come with a free 3am wake-up call.

Here’s what’s happening: your liver keeps your blood sugar steady while you sleep. But when there’s alcohol on board, your liver drops everything to clear it first. Blood sugar dips, stress hormones kick in to rescue you, and suddenly you’re wide awake replaying a conversation from 2009.

This isn’t me telling you to skip the w**e at Thanksgiving. It’s me explaining your body so you can make the choice that feels right for you. Understanding beats rules every time.

If you’re having a glass this weekend: with food, not before. Water alongside. Then pay attention to your sleep.

If 3pm turns you into a pantry raccoon, this one’s for you.

I used to think my afternoon crash meant I needed more coffee or more discipline. Turns out I needed breakfast. A real one.

When your morning is coffee and good intentions, your blood sugar is running on fumes. By afternoon it crashes, and your body goes looking for the fastest fuel it can find. Cravings aren’t a character flaw. They’re a clue.

Perimenopause makes us more sensitive to these swings, which is why what worked at 30 doesn’t work now.

Try this for 3 days: protein at breakfast. Then notice how your afternoon feels. Not forever. Just 3 days.

Okay, THIS is the kind of message that makes my whole day. 🙌

When we looked at her food journal, she was already training consistently for her first HYROX.

There was solid effort there.

But her energy was sitting at a 6/10 and her nutrition wasn’t fully supporting how much movement she was doing throughout the day.

One of the shifts we made?

Prioritizing protein after her workouts.

And yesterday, this landed in my inbox:

Her runs feel easier.
She can go farther.
She’s gaining strength.

She hasn’t followed every recommendation perfectly - She simply started with the gap that mattered most.

And that right there?

10 OUT OF 10. I’m obsessed. 👏

Consider this your reminder to stop treating your post-workout meal like an afterthought.

If your cholesterol has started creeping up in your 40s, you might assume it means you’ve been eating badly or not exercising enough.

But that may not be the whole story.

During the menopause transition, changing estrogen levels can influence cholesterol, where our bodies store fat, blood-sugar regulation and the health of our blood vessels.

Nutrition, movement, genetics, stress, sleep and aging still matter. But research suggests that some cardiovascular risk factors can shift during the menopause transition beyond what aging alone explains.

That doesn’t mean these changes should be blamed entirely on hormones—or that poor heart health is inevitable.

It means women deserve to know that this connection exists so we can ask better questions, understand our numbers and make informed decisions about our health.

Has a healthcare provider ever explained the connection between perimenopause and heart health to you?

Perimenopause changes more than your period.

So much of the conversation about changing bodies in midlife centres on weight. But what may be changing beneath the surface matters far more than whether our jeans fit differently.

As hormones begin to shift, we may experience changes in:

• how our bodies regulate blood sugar
• cholesterol and blood pressure
• where fat is stored
• how easily we preserve muscle

Together, these shifts can affect our metabolic health and metabolic health is closely connected to heart health.

Research suggests that some changes in cholesterol, body-fat distribution and metabolic-syndrome risk during the menopause transition cannot be explained by aging alone.

That doesn’t mean poor health is inevitable.

It means midlife is an important time to become more informed about our bodies and more intentional about how we support them.

That can include:

• strength training and regular movement
• eating enough protein and fibre
• protecting sleep and recovery
• knowing our blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar markers
• working with our healthcare providers to understand our individual risks

Perimenopause isn’t only a time of change.

It’s an opportunity to learn what our bodies need now and influence how we feel and function in the years ahead.

What part of your health are you thinking about differently in midlife?

My younger body belonged to a younger version of my life.

A different schedule.
Different responsibilities.
Different stress.
Different hormones.
Different demands.

So why would my goal be to get my body back there?

For years, health felt connected to shrinking, control and proving that I could be disciplined enough.

At 47, I’m thinking much farther ahead.

Perimenopause often begins in our 40s and for some women, earlier.

For some, perimenopause and the years after make up close to half our lives.

This isn’t a brief interruption I need to fight my way through so I can get back to who I was.

It’s far too much of my life to spend chasing a younger version of myself.

I want to build strength so I can carry groceries, travel, play, lift heavy things and remain independent as I age.

I want to nourish myself in a way that supports my energy not keep underestimating how much my body needs for everything I ask of it.

I want to respect sleep and recovery as part of health rather than treating them as things I’ll get to when everything else is done.

My body changing isn’t proof that I’ve failed.

It’s proof of a life lived. An invitation to understand what this season of life needs from me now.

There is too much life ahead of me to spend it chasing a body that belongs to my past.

I’m choosing to care for the woman I’m still becoming.

What are you choosing for the years ahead?

It’s tempting to believe that supporting your hormones requires another supplement, complicated protocols or a perfectly timed routine.

Sometimes additional support and deeper investigation are necessary.

But they can’t replace the foundations your body relies on every day:

Eating enough - consistently!
Recovering from the exercise you’re asking your body to perform.
Protecting your sleep.
Supporting your digestion.
And recognizing when “pushing through” has become normal.

These things may sound basic, but basic doesn’t mean insignificant.

Before adding another hormone hack, get curious about which foundation your body may still be missing.

Which one feels hardest right now?
