Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) is a devotional practice to honour the Sun as the ultimate symbol of light and how it nourishes us, as it nourishes all life on our planet. We practice outside to remember our connection to nature and its elements.
108 is a significant number in spiritual traditions such as Buddhism and Hinduism for many reasons. There are 108 beads on a japa mala used for meditation, 108 marma points on the body in Ayurvedic tradition, each deity in Hinduism has 108 names, there are 108 sacred sites in India, it has astrological significance, among many more.
When we take a devotional practice such as Surya Namaskar and repeat it with intention, the repetition becomes much more meditative.

Practice becomes firmly grounded when well attended to for a long time, without break, and in all earnestness.
