Why do we talk so much about starting speech therapy early? 🌱

💡Research shows the early years are an especially important time for communication development!

💡Early speech and language skills are closely connected to later learning, literacy, and academic success.

✨ Early intervention doesn’t always mean intensive speech therapy. Sometimes it simply means screening, parent coaching, home strategies, and monitoring development over time.

🌠 When concerns come up, “check and see” > “wait and see.”

They really are amazing for building anticipation, engagement, and communication…and worth having to brace ourselves every time (mostly).

Jumping Jack is one of my favourites to pull into the spring & summer rotation!

This week I used it to target:
- Articulation
- Phonetic awareness
- Turn-taking
- Following directions
- Engagement
- Vocabulary expansion

As Speech and Hearing Month comes to a close, I wanted to share a little more about the world of speech-language pathology — a field that is so broad, meaningful, and often misunderstood!

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) support communication in many different forms, including:
• speech sounds
• language development
• social communication
• AAC (augmentative & alternative communication)

SLPs also work in areas like:
• feeding & swallowing
• fluency (stuttering)
• voice
• literacy
• cognitive communication
…and more!

From infants to older adults, SLPs work across the lifespan in many different settings! Swipe through to learn more.

Each of these domains impacts connection, learning, relationships, independence, and quality of life. It’s a privilege to support families and clients in these areas every day. 🤍

Here’s to all the SLPs and clinicians sitting in tiny chairs or on the floor so you can be at just the right level.

These spring-themed favourites are great for building early language through repetition, prediction, and simple, engaging stories.

You don’t have to read every word—focus on:
✨ Starting with simple language for little ones
✨ Talking about the pictures
✨ Following your child’s interests
✨ Reading it the same way each time at first, to build verbal routines
✨ Pausing and giving your child time to join in. This brings opportunities for your child to join in!
