Here's what to prepare before you fly:

Most major airlines allow approved POCs as medical devices, though it's worth confirming your specific airline's policy before booking. You'll also need a letter from your doctor confirming your oxygen needs and flow settings, along with enough battery life to cover 150% of your flight duration in case of delays. Be sure to notify the airline at least 48 hours in advance, and keep your POC documentation in your carry-on rather than checked luggage!

You've heard of CPAP, but what about BiPAP?

While both devices treat sleep-disordered breathing, they work differently. CPAP delivers one continuous pressure level throughout the night. BiPAP delivers two, a higher pressure when you inhale and a lower pressure when you exhale, making it easier and more comfortable for some patients to breathe.

BiPAP is typically prescribed for patients who find CPAP pressure uncomfortable, or those with conditions like COPD, central sleep apnea, or respiratory failure.

It might sound surprising, but yes, some patients only need supplemental oxygen while they sleep.

Here's why: oxygen levels can drop significantly during sleep even in people who maintain normal levels while awake. This is especially common with:
- COPD
- Heart failure
- Sleep-related breathing disorders

Nocturnal oxygen therapy targets exactly those nighttime drops, without requiring oxygen use during the day.
